GAME RECAP

Antonio McDyess scored 22 points and Rex Chapman had 15 as the Phoenix Suns used a big fourth quarter to win for the eighth time in 10 games, 92-77 over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Minnesota's Sam Mitchell snapped a 61-61 tie with a three-point play early in the fourth quarter before Phoenix took the lead for good with a 13-4 run. Steve Nash scored seven of his 13 points in the spurt and McDyess had six, including a dunk that made it 74-68 with 7:45 to play.

A pair of free throws by Tom Hammonds cut it to 74-71 and Minnesota was still hanging around at 80-74 with 4:08 left before Cliff Robinson had a dunk and George McCloud nailed a three-pointer to push the margin to 85-74 with 2:57 remaining.

The Timberwolves went more than nine minutes in the final quarter without a field goal. They finished 3-for-19 during the period, tying a team record for fewest baskets made in a quarter, last accomplished on April 12th against Atlanta.

"That was one of our best defensive efforts in a while," said Suns coach Danny Ainge. "We had good energy in the fourth quarter when it mattered most. We were fortunate that the Wolves weren't shooting the ball well in the first 2 1/2 quarters. We looked like we were tired."

Tom Gugliotta scored 21 points and Stephon Marbury had 13 for the Timberwolves, who had won five of their last six games and four straight at home. Minnesota, which lost a then NBA-record 25 straight games to Phoenix from December 1989 to December 1995, had captured both meetings this season and five of the last six in the series.

"We went into our shoot-around this morning and we ran a few plays where we had three guys shoot air balls," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "I told our guys that we are going to have to win on defense if we shot like we did this morning. I wasn't aware we were going to carry it over into the game."

Chapman tallied six points in an early 12-0 Suns run that gave them a 15-8 lead with 5:10 left in the opening period. They led by as many as nine points in the quarter, but had it cut to 21-19 after 12 minutes.

Phoenix led 41-40 at the intermission, but Marbury and Kevin Garnett each scored four points in a 10-2 run to begin the third quarter that gave Minnesota a 50-43 lead with 7:50 to go.

Phoenix immediately responded with a 16-5 burst, which included six points from Cedric Ceballos and was capped by Jason Kidd's three-pointer with 3:12 left that made it 59-55.

McCloud contributed 13 points off the bench, Ceballos had 12 and seven rebounds, while Kidd finished with 15 assists and nine boards for Phoenix. The Suns made just 9-of-19 free throws, but committed only nine turnovers.

"Neither team shot the ball particularly well, but we responded with great defense," said Kidd. "Energy is a big part of this game and you have to have it from the start. The last time we were here we gave the game away in the fourth quarter. Tonight we buckled down in the fourth quarter."

Garnett totaled 13 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Timberwolves, who were held to a season-low point total. Minnesota shot just 36 percent (28-of-77) from the floor, including 0-for-7 from three-point range.

"She (the ball) didn't want to go in tonight," said Garnett. "It was just one of those nights that did not go the Timberwolves' way. I thought we came out with a lot of energy, but we missed a lot of shots tonight. I'm not an excuse kind of guy. We came out, we didn't play well, we lost."

Mitchell grabbed four boards to snap a tie with Christian Laettner (2,225) and become Minnesota's all-time leading rebounder.
