GAME RECAP

Rookie Maurice Taylor scored a season-high 25 points and Brent Barry added 22 to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 110-102 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies, who have dropped eight straight games.

Rodney Rogers had 19 points and Eric Piatkowski contributed 17, including eight during a key spurt early in the fourth quarter. The Clippers have won four of their last five games and four straight at home.

"We rebounded well, we shot the ball well, got a couple of loose balls and got the momentum going," Rogers said. "When you start off like that, bad things seem to happen, but we knew eventually things would turn around."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim poured in 30 points and Sam Mack added 22 for the fading Grizzlies, who have dropped 11 of their last 12 games. Vancouver again was without rookie point guard Antonio Daniels, who missed the game with the flu.

Los Angeles opened the fourth quarter with a 12-4 burst, turning a two-point lead into a 89-79 advantage. Barry started the period with a jumper, and after rookie Keith Closs blocked Abdur-Rahim's shot, Piatkowski dunked for an 81-75 lead.

Chris Robinson answered with a basket for Vancouver, but Piatkowski buried a three-pointer to make it 84-77 with 10:09 to play. He added another three-pointer to cap the burst and give the Clippers an 89-79 cushion with 8:44 to play.

"I just think the most important thing in the fourth quarter was we picked up our offensive and defensive intensity and played great defense on Shareef Abdur-Rahim, because we know he is an outstanding player," Piatkowski said. "Our defense was creating our opportunities. We were just finding the open man, we just kept knocking them down."

The Grizzlies got as close as 102-96 when Lee Mayberry, starting in place of Daniels, buried a three-pointer with three minutes remaining. But Darrick Martin had a layup, and after a free throw by Mack, Taylor made two more for a 106-97 lead.

The Clippers, playing before just 4,107 fans at the Sports Arena, shot just 7-of-23 in the first quarter and fell behind, 24-18. But they came back in the second quarter, hitting 16-of-24. Los Angeles closed the half with a 20-10 burst, with Closs supplying 12 points. Taylor added 11 points in the first half, which ended with the Clippers ahead, 55-46.

"It was really boring, the crowd wasn't into it," Piatkowski said. "The place was dead. It was hard for me to even get in the game sitting on the bench. But you have to find some way to get yourself into the game. We knew if we knocked down the shots they would eventually fall."

"We can not allow guys like Closs and Taylor to have a combined 23-some points off the bench at halftime," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "Those are two talented players, but we just can't let these guys come out and hurt us like that."

Closs was 6-of-6 from the field for the Clippers, who shot 51 percent (43-of-85). Los Angeles was again without top rebounder Lorenzen Wright, who has a strained ligament in his left knee.

Otis Thorpe had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 51 percent (43-of-84).

Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch moved into third place all-time with 936 career victories.
