GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored a season-high 38 points despite missing nearly half of his 21 free throws and Nick Van Exel dished out 18 assists as the Los Angeles Lakers continued their home dominance over the Milwaukee Bucks with a 114-102 victory.

O'Neal was 13-of-19 from the field but sank just 12-of-21 free throws. He also recorded his 1,000th career blocked shot, rejecting Ray Allen and forcing a jump ball with eight minutes to go in the first half.

"I still get winded at times. A couple more games, hopefully I'm there," said O'Neal, who played 39 minutes. "Tonight, my teammates looked for me, we just played well. We played hard. I'm going to send a lot of teams home who hack Shaq."

O'Neal, who has missed more than half the season due to various injuries, also put the Lakers ahead, 50-48, with a pair of free throws with 2:39 to play in the second quarter. Los Angeles would never trail again, improving to 11-1 with its All-Star center in the lineup and posting its sixth straight home win over the Bucks.

"He's not back, folks," claimed Lakers coach Del Harris. "We haven't had Shaq together this year. He's going to play better."

"I don't see how," disagreed Bucks center Ervin Johnson, who fouled out with six points. "I'd hate to see him when he's 100 percent, he might go for 100 points. Great players you can't stop, you just try to stop the rest of the team."

The 18 assists were a season best for Van Exel, who also had six points.

Terrell Brandon netted 15 points, Armon Gilliam had 14 and Glenn Robinson 13 for Milwaukee, which has lost the last five meetings with the Lakers. It was the first time in 14 games that Robinson has been held under 20 points.

Elliot Perry scored 11 points and Andrew Lang and Ricky Pierce each added 10 off the bench for Milwaukee, which is winless at the Great Western Forum since March 22nd, 1991.

Robinson and Tyrone Hill started off hot, scoring four points apiece as the Bucks jumped out to a 15-6 lead. Los Angeles countered with a 13-2 surge, taking a 19-17 advantage on a three-point play by Rick Fox with 5:25 to go.

"It's been a lot easier as of late with the big guy back," said Fox, who also had a season-high five steals. "I think that these guys are getting more comfortable with me. I'm getting more comfortable on the court."

Leading 50-48 after O'Neal's free throws, Fox and O'Neal each hit 1-of-2 from the line before Gilliam answered with a bucket. O'Neal hit another two from the line and Derek Fisher followed with a basket to give the Lakers a 56-50 lead at the break.

O'Neal also had nine rebounds and three of Los Angeles' 10 blocks. Fox scored 19 points and Kobe Bryant and Eddie Jones contributed 17 each for the Lakers, who shot 55 percent (41-of-74) from the field but just 68 percent (30-of-44) from the line.

"We tried a lot of different schemes to stop Shaq," said Milwaukee coach Chris Ford. "Some of them were successful and some weren't. They got a lot of easy baskets in transition. We turned the ball over and missed some of our jump shots."

Los Angeles cruised the rest of the way, building its lead as big as 17 points on Bryant's lay-in with 11:20 to play and going on to its fifth straight game in which it scored 100 or more points.

Hill had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who held a 39-35 rebounding edge but lost for the third time in four games. Robinson had three blocks, but failed to lead his team in scoring for the first time in eight games.
