GAME RECAP

The Denver Nuggets established a new franchise record for consecutive losses, suffering their 15th straight defeat, 96-89 to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Nuggets, who own the league's worst record at 2-30, surpassed their previous worst skid, a 14-game slide from December 5th, 1992 to January 5th, 1993. Denver dropped to 0-18 on the road, where it has won just once in its last 33 games dating back to last season.

David Robinson scored 22 points and Tim Duncan added 20 for the Spurs, who have won five straight and 12 of their last 13 games. San Antonio, which also posted its 10th straight home win, leads the Midwest Division by one-half game over Utah. Denver is 19 1/2 games back.

Tony Battie scored 17 points and Bobby Jackson and LaPhonso Ellis had 13 apiece for Denver, which fell to 0-3 against San Antonio this season.

"We've played aggressive, giving ourselves chances to win games down the stretch," Ellis said. "That's been the story all year. Tonight was no different."

Denver led 50-48 at halftime and took its largest lead when Battie opened the third quarter with a basket. But San Antonio embarked on an 11-2 run less than three minutes later to take control.

Duncan's basket started the spurt and gave San Antonio a 57-56 lead with 8:47 remaining in the period. Denver went ahead again for the last time before Chuck Person buried a three-pointer to give the Spurs the lead for good, 60-58, with 7:15 left in the quarter.

Two free throws by Robinson capped the burst and gave San Antonio a 68-58 advantage with 5:34 to go in the third. The Spurs maintained the 10-point lead and had a 77-67 advantage entering the fourth.

"I felt like they'd come in and play well," Robinson said. "We were disappointed in the first half. We were playing good basketball and we were still behind. In the second half we kept our energy up and Monty (Williams) did a great job to help pull us through."

The Spurs had their largest lead at 87-74, but Battie sparked an 11-2 Denver burst with a bucket with 7:16 to play. He capped the surge with 4:40 to go, bringing the Nuggets within 89-85 with 4:40 remaining. But after Duncan and Battie exchanged baskets, Robinson hit four free throws and Avery Johnson one to extend San Antonio's lead to 96-87 with 36 seconds to go.

"We started out fine, but once we had a 10-point lead we packed it up," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "They played with great emotion for 48 minutes. They played with a lot of heart and they almost pulled it off."

Johnson finished with 16 points and eight assists and Williams added 14 points off the bench for San Antonio, which shot 55 percent (35-of-64) from the field. Duncan had nine rebounds and Robinson eight, helping the Spurs to a 38-33 advantage.

Johnny Newman and Danny Fortson contributed 10 points apiece for the Nuggets, who shot 43.5 percent (37-of-85).
