GAME RECAP

Jalen Rose scored a season-high 18 points to lead six players in double figures and a huge effort from the bench as the Indiana Pacers earned an 87-80 victory over the injury-depleted Houston Rockets.

Indiana rebounded from a one-point home loss to Phoenix on Tuesday to move within one-half game of the first-place Chicago Bulls in the Central Division. The Pacers, who won for just the third time in their last 20 trips to Houston, have held their last four opponents to just 79.8 points per game.

Travis Best and Antonio Davis chipped in 10 points apiece off the Pacers' bench, which outscored the Rockets' reserves, 46-22. Reggie Miller scored 14 points and fellow starters Mark Jackson and Derrick McKey each added 10.

"I tried to get five guys out there that could get the job done," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "I was disappointed because we didn't come out like I thought we would, but Jalen made a couple of big plays to help us."

Houston, which has lost seven of its last 10 games, was playing without all three of its former Dream Teamers. Clyde Drexler was a late scratch due to a sore right shoulder and the team learned Wednesday that Charles Barkley is sidelined for a week with a hematoma on his right middle toe.

Houston's Kevin Willis had 32 points and 11 rebounds starting at center in place of Hakeem Olajuwon, who is sidelined at least until the end of the month after undergoing knee surgery.

"I'm proud of how hard we played. We were able to make a game of it and with a play here or there, we might have won it," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Because we had so many of our scorers out, we had to run some other plays and we were a bit rusty with them."

Othella Harrington started for Barkley and finished with a career-high 15 points and a season-high 11 boards, but scored just two points in the second half.

The Pacers never trailed, reeling off the first six points of the game and opening a 21-11 lead after one period. Miller scored eight points and Jackson added six in the quarter when the Pacers held Houston to just 17 percent (4-of-23) shooting.

"I guess there is a tendency to slack off a bit, but we came out aggressive and controlled the first quarter," Miller said in reference to the Rockets' injury problems. "You gotta give Houston credit for getting back in the game."

Rose, who was 8-of-9 from the field, scored all 13 of his first-half points in the second period, when Indiana built its biggest lead. He had 10 of the Pacers' first 19 points of the second as his team created a 40-23 cushion.

"I tried to be aggressive when I got out there," Rose said. "We have veteran starters that get most of the minutes. I just try to make the most of my time out there."

Rose hit a jumper and a layup around a bucket by Davis to make it 27-13 with 9:02 left. Rose added a pair of long jumpers and a runner in the lane before a three-pointer by Fred Hoiberg gave Indiana its biggest lead with 5:06 remaining. The Pacers went on to a 48-37 halftime lead.

"I was fortunate to get some shots to go," Rose said. "My teammates saw that and kept getting me the ball."

A hook by Willis pulled the Rockets within 57-52, but Rose answered with a 12-footer and a three-point play to push the lead back to double digits.

Houston was killed by its three-point shooting, hitting just 2-of-19 from behind the arc. The Rockets missed their first 15 attempts before Brent Price drained a three with 7:53 left in the fourth quarter.

Houston came as close as 80-76 with 2:34 to go on another hook shot by Willis, but Davis responded with three free throws and the Rockets were unable to convert down the stretch.

"Indiana's a great team and even though we were shorthanded, we had a chance near the end," Price said. "I thought we showed a whole lot of heart tonight because we kept it within striking distance."

The Rockets shot just 38 percent (29-of-77) from the floor and were also without veteran shooting guard Eddie Johnson, who sat out with a sore right elbow.
