GAME RECAP

Kerry Kittles scored a season-high 27 points, grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and had a pivotal three-point play down the stretch as the New Jersey Nets won their fourth straight home game, defeating the struggling Orlando Magic, 89-87.

Kittles' three-point play with 1:16 remaining gave New Jersey an 84-80 lead. Magic guard Vernon Maxwell missed a long three-point attempt but the ball went out of bounds off the Nets. Maxwell missed a layup but the Nets committed a 10-second violation and the Magic had another chance.

Maxwell missed a driving layup but was fouled with 22 seconds left. He made one of two free throw attempts but Kendall Gill, who missed six of his first 11 free throws, answered with a pair. Maxwell missed another long three-pointer and the Nets made their free throws down the stretch, surviving a pair of late three-pointers by Derek Harper.

"This was an outstanding win for us," said Nets coach John Calipari. "It was a fight, we missed some free throws and struggled in the fourth quarter but came out with the win."

Kittles, who played a more visible role in the offense with starting point guard Sam Cassell out with neck and shoulder spasms, was 10-of-17 from the field. Douglas, who started in Cassell's place, was 6-of-10 from the field for 16 points with nine assists.

"Tonight I just tried to attack my man and let the shots fall," Kittles said. "When you are struggling with your shot the only way to succeed is to keep shooting."

"I can put players in positions where they can succeed but at some point the player has to come out and make plays. That is what Kerry did tonight," added Calipari.

Orlando's Rony Seikaly had 25 points -- none in the fourth quarter -- and 12 rebounds for Orlando, which has won just two of its last 12 games.

"We started out with a great effort but were 4-for-21 in the fourth quarter until Harper hit the final two shots," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "Give them credit, they did what they had to do to win. Their defense was excellent in the fourth quarter."

Orlando took its first lead of the game just over five minutes into the third quarter on a dunk by Bo Outlaw. The Nets scored the next six points to take a 63-58 lead with 4:28 to go in the period. Seikaly kept the Magic close and Orlando closed the quarter with a 9-2 run to seize a 71-68 advantage heading into the final 12 minutes.

New Jersey, which won for just the second time in five games, was just 6-of-21 (28 percent) from the field in the third quarter.

The Nets took early leads of 6-0 and 12-3 and held a 16-7 bulge when Orlando answered with a 13-4 run to knot the contest. Kittles had eight in the period as the Nets took a 26-24 lead into the second quarter. Seikaly had 10 for Orlando, which made 11-of-20 shots.

Rookie Keith Van Horn's 10-footer with 6:30 left in the opening half gave New Jersey a 38-28 lead. But again Orlando responded, going on a 16-6 burst to tie the contest. Veteran Danny Schayes sparked the spurt with an 18-footer and Gerald Wilkins capped it with a three-pointer with 1:51 remaining.

Van Horn and Kittles had 14 apiece at the half for New Jersey, which made 20 of its first 38 shots. Seikaly had 17 on 7-of-9 shooting.

Jayson Williams finished with 15 rebounds -- including eight in the final quarter.
