GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored 23 points in the first half before running into foul trouble early in the third quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers cruised to a 125-115 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

O'Neal, who finished with 32 points despite collecting his fourth foul four minutes into the second half, scored nine points in the first quarter. Eddie Jones had 11 of his 27 points and Kobe Bryant added 10 to pace the Lakers to a 38-29 lead after the opening 12 minutes.

"I'm still not 100 percent," said O'Neal. "But I can get up and down the floor, and if my man scores I'm going to want the ball."

Jones added a season-high six steals for the Lakers, who recorded their highest point total on the road this season in winning for the fifth time in six games. Bryant contributed 15 points as the Lakers hit 52 percent (42-of-81) from the field, including 7-of-14 from three-point range.

"Kobe's so athletic. He's more athletic than I am," Jones said. "He's young and he's learning every day."

Rookie Maurice Taylor netted a season-high 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting and Lamond Murray added 20 for the Clippers, who had a four-game home winning streak snapped.

The Clippers' Eric Piatkowski forged a 26-26 tie with a 2:22 left in the first quarter before the Lakers used a 12-3 run to close out the period and move ahead for good.

Jones started the surge with a three-pointer with 2:17 left, O'Neal dunked and Bryant hit two free throws for a 33-26 edge. Brent Barry ended the run with a pair of free throws for the Clippers before the Lakers scored five of the last six points of the period.

O'Neal poured it on in the second quarter as the Lakers padded their lead. At one point, the All-Star center scored eight straight points -- four on dunks -- to build the lead to 64-53 with 3:19 left.

"Shaq is just too tough," admitted Clippers coach Bill Fitch. "We try to do different things. We were fast-breaking as much as we could, but the Lakers are just a very, very good team."

The Clippers scored a season-high 63 points in the first half but still trailed by nine at the break. Taylor had 18 of his points over the first 24 minutes for the Clippers, who shot 49 percent (36-of-74) from the field and held a 43-33 rebounding edge.

Darrick Martin hit just 3-of-10 from the floor but made all 11 free throw attempts to finish with 18 points as the Clippers hit on 39-of-52 from the line. The Lakers shot 49 foul shots, sinking 34.

"We can't keep on sending teams to the line," Jones said. "We have the confidence that we're going to win, but against a tough team we have to watch our fouls."

The Lakers crafted a 17-point lead in the the third quarter on a free throw by Bryant. But the Clippers whittled away in the final quarter, cutting the deficit to 115-108 on Piatkowski's three-pointer with 4:25 to play.

O'Neal answered with a free throw and a dunk as the Lakers limited the Clippers to one field goal the rest of the way, a three-pointer by Piatkowski, who finished with 14.

"We're a good team, but when we face a team like the Clippers, we have to put them away," said Jones. "We had them down and we let them back in the game."

Nick Van Exel scored 17 points and Elden Campbell added 13 and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Lakers, who won their fifth straight game on the road to remain two games behind first-place Seattle in the Pacific Division.
