GAME RECAP

Rex Chapman scored half of his 18 points in the third quarter as the Phoenix Suns came away with a 100-79 rout of the San Antonio Spurs, who lost for just the second time in their last 14 games.

Antonio McDyess contributed 18 points and Steve Nash added 16 for the Suns, who did not commit a turnover until there was 10:10 left in the game. They finished with a season-low seven turnovers, winning for the ninth time in their last 11 games.

"I've never been involved in a game like that before," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "Zero turnovers in the first three quarters of the game is pretty spectacular."

"We really took care of it," Chapman said. "I think everybody was really in tune to the game plan."

Phoenix has allowed no more than 90 points in 10 of its last 11 wins and became just the second of San Antonio's last 14 opponents to score 100 points or more. One season after going 10-22 through their first 32 games, the Suns improved to 22-10 on the season.

Chuck Person scored 16 points as the Spurs had their five-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the second time in the last month. David Robinson had 15 and 16 rebounds and Tim Duncan added 15 and nine for San Antonio, which fell one-half game behind Utah for first place in the Midwest Division.

"We forced zero turnovers and that is not doing things right," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We were sloppy, but we competed. Any time you just can't stick it in the hole, you get this type of result."

Six players scored in double figures for the Suns, who shot 48 percent (40-of-83) from the field and held the Spurs to just 35 percent (30-of-86). Phoenix also tied a season high with nine blocked shots, including five by Hot Rod Williams.

"We got any shot we wanted for the most part but, we couldn't hit anything," Person said.

"I think tonight the guys just took it to heart and said we need to go out there and play 'D' because people have been saying we're not a good defensive team, but we've been playing great defense the last couple games," McDyess explained.

Cedric Ceballos had 14 points and eight rebounds while Jason Kidd registered 10 points, 12 assists and seven boards. McDyess also grabbed seven rebounds and shot 8-of-11 from the floor.

The Spurs were still within striking distance when Monty Williams hit a free throw to make it 58-48 early in the third. But Chapman answered with the first of his two three-pointers in the period and McDyess followed with a 16-footer to build a 15-point bulge. Later in the period, Chapman's second three-pointer increased the lead to 70-53.

Duncan's jumper trimmed the deficit to 73-61 with 2:21 left in the third, but Phoenix finished the period with an 8-0 spurt to take control for good. Chapman converted a three-point play and Nash drained a jumper before George McCloud, who scored 13 points off the bench, hit from behind the arc with 23 seconds remaining for an 81-61 cushion.

Chapman, who is averaging 21.0 points over the last four games, did not even play in the fourth quarter when Phoenix led by as many as 27 points.

"We executed well and made shots, which always helps," Chapman said. "I'm sure they'll say it wasn't one of their better games. I know they can play better, but we did a good job and took them out of what they wanted to do."

The Suns scored 10 of the first 14 points of the second period and Kidd's layup gave his team a 35-28 lead. After Robinson sank two free throws to pull San Antonio within 47-43 with two minutes left, Chapman and Ceballos answered with back-to-back buckets and the Suns went on for a 53-45 halftime lead.

The Spurs, who committed 16 turnovers, got just 11 points on 5-of-18 shooting from its starting backcourt of Avery Johnson and Jaren Jackson.

"We didn't play the way we wanted to, we didn't defend the way we wanted to," Duncan concluded. "They (Phoenix) played well tonight. It was a great game plan that they came with and they kept us off balance with double teams."
