GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 26 points and Vlade Divac added eight of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Charlotte Hornets handed the Vancouver Grizzlies their ninth consecutive loss, 98-90.

David Wesley had 15 points and Anthony Mason added 15 and 12 rebounds for the Hornets, who improved to 2-2 on their six-game road trip.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 22 points and dished out seven assists while Bryant Reeves contributed 20 points and nine rebounds for Vancouver, which has not won since an 88-86 victory over Portland on December 21st.

"I felt like that for the most part we shared the ball and played together," Abdur-Rahim said. "I thought we didn't have too many poor shots. The thing that hurt us is that we couldn't execute well down the stretch."

After Wesley's jumper with 10:10 left tied the game at 72-72, Charlotte went on a 15-5 run capped by a three-pointer by Bobby Phills.

The Grizzlies came as close as five points twice, the last time on a basket by Reeves with 1:16 to go. But Divac hit a jumper and Wesley made a pair of free throws to push Charlotte's advantage to 95-86 with 34.6 seconds remaining.

"We got some fouls and David Wesley was able to attack the basket," Charlotte head coach Dave Cowens said. "But our defense won the game for us. It was a muscle game. A good low post game and we just got a little run at the end to win."

The Hornets went into the second leading, 25-16, but were outscored, 24-15, as Vancouver forged a 40-40 tie on a free throw by Blue Edwards. After trading leads, Abdur-Rahim's three-pointer with 29.9 seconds left in the quarter allowed the Grizzlies to go into halftime tied, 46-46.

"We just got careless," Rice said. "Anytime you get careless out there and are making lots of mistakes, you give the other team a chance to hang around. That could have cost us this ball game tonight."

Mason was harsher in his assessment of his team.

"If you are a medicore team, a win is a win. We've got a lot of talent and we played terrible," he said. "We're letting teams stay in it. The guys have hidden agendas and that's not good at all. It's garbage, a whole lots of (garbage) going on. It's going to end up with us putting our foot in our own (buts). But we can't see it now until it hurts real bad."

The third quarter featured eight lead changes and five ties. Antonio Daniels' free throw with 5:35 left gave the Grizzlies a 60-59 lead but Charlotte scored six straight points to go up by five with 3:15 left in the quarter.

A three-pointer by Sam Mack put Vancouver on top for the last time in the quarter, 67-66, with 1:01 left. However, Divic made a layup and then stole the ball from Abdur-Rahim. Rice followed with a 20-foot jumper for a 70-67 Charlotte lead after three.

Phills finished with 12 points and Wesley had seven assists for the Hornets, who shot 14-of-16 from the free-throw line. Charlotte played without Dell Curry, who was out with a right calf strain.

Mack had 14 points, Edwards chipped in with 12 and Otis Thorpe pulled down seven rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 55.9 percent (38-for-68) from the field and 8-of-15 from the line (53.3 percent).

"I think we played well enough to win tonight and got close," Mack said. "They're a very aggressive team. They were most aggressive down the stretch. They got some calls and we didn't get any. But that's basketball and we can't complain about that."
