GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 21 points, including four free throws in the final 9.3 seconds, as the Charlotte Hornets capped a successful Western trip with a 98-93 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

David Wesley led the Hornets with 23 points -- 19 in the first half. Anthony Mason added 22 and nine rebounds and Vlade Divac contributed eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter. That duo combined for 15 points in the final period.

Charlotte, which improved to 8-0 in games decided by five points or less, claimed the last three games after dropping the first two on its trip.

"Three and two sounds so much better than 2-3," Rice said. "I'll take that any day. It was definitely a big win for us. We needed to make this a successful road trip."

Shaquille O'Neal had 32 points and 13 rebounds and Nick Van Exel added 18 points for the Lakers, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and missed a chance to gain on first-place Seattle in the Pacific Division.

"It was a disappointing loss for us because in as much as Seattle lost in New York we would have certainly liked to capitalize and move to one game (back) and best record in the league," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "But we just didn't take advantage."

Charlotte brought a 76-71 lead into the fourth quarter before Elden Campbell and Kobe Bryant opened the period with consecutive baskets to bring Los Angeles within one with 11:06 remaining. Rice and Divac answered with layups to push the lead to 80-75.

Mason then hit two free throws and, after a short jumper by Campbell, dunked on the break to extend Charlotte's lead to 84-77 with 8:14 to play.

The Lakers closed within 92-90 on O'Neal's dunk with 92 seconds left, but Mason grabbed the rebound of Divac's miss and was fouled. After he made both free throws, O'Neal hit one to make it 94-91 with 12 seconds to go. Rice followed with two foul shots for a 96-91 lead with 9.3 seconds remaining.

Eddie Jones was fouled away from the ball, giving the Lakers two shots and the ball. After he made one foul shot, Rick Fox was fouled while shooting a three-pointer. He made just one free throw to cut Charlotte's lead to 96-93 before Rice completed the scoring with two from the line with 6.4 seconds to go.

"We made our free throws at the end," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "Mason made two big ones to give us some breathing room and Glen made all of his. And then they miss some. The difference between winning and losing almost every game is free throws."

The Lakers held a 32-28 lead after one quarter. Despite 10 points from Wesley in the second, the Lakers maintained a 56-55 halftime lead. Rice had seven points in the third and his runner in the lane allowed Charlotte to forge a 71-71 tie with 1:59 left in the period. Matt Geiger followed with a dunk and a three-point play to give the Hornets a 76-71 advantage.

Geiger finished with nine points and Bobby Phills grabbed 12 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 43 percent (36-of-84) from the field and held a 48-36 rebounding advantage.

Jones had 15 points and Fox 10 for the Lakers, who shot 48 percent (34-of-71). Jones had seven assists and Van Exel six.
