GAME RECAP

Tim Hardaway had 20 points and nine assists and Alonzo Mourning added 17 points and 15 rebounds as the Miami Heat handed the Vancouver Grizzlies their 10th straight loss, 96-90.

Jamal Mashburn contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists and P.J. Brown had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Heat (23-11), who have won their last three games to move into a tie with Indiana for second place in the Eastern Conference.

Miami shot just 39 percent (32-for-83) from the field, but made 25-of-33 free throws (76 percent) and held a 55-41 rebounding advantage. The Heat are 2-0 on their current six-game road trip against Western Conference teams.

"I thought we were very disrespectful to the game," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "You know basketball, when you get a 20-point lead, we didn't finish, didnt stay focused, turned the ball over, took poor shots and didn't guard. I think we're on the way to becoming a good team and we don't finish the teams and we pick up habits that says we aren't going anywhere."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Sam Mack scored 19 points for the Grizzlies, who joined fellow Midwest Division teams Denver, Dallas and Toronto, as teams that have suffered through losing streaks of at least 10 games this season.

"Tonight we played hard and competed against a good team," Abdur-Rahim said. "We had some lapses, we lost our composure for a few minutes and things got away from us. But we continued to fight. We did some things to make us better. We just have to stick together all the time."

Miami pulled away in the second period, outscoring the Grizzlies 32-18 to take a 55-40 lead at haftime. Isaac Austin had a dunk to cap a 12-4 surge, giving the Heat a 41-31 advantage with 4:50 left in the second period. Eric Murdock, who played 11 minutes, scored all of his points during the run making 8-of-8 shots from the free throw line.

Mashburn had four points in a 10-5 burst that was capped by Voshon Lenard's jumper for a 65-45 lead with 4:52 remaining in the third. Lenard had 16 points and seven rebounds as the Heat placed all five starters in double figures.

"We just played to score," Lenard said. "We got up by 20 and then they started getting back into the game. They got a couple of rhythm shots and then pressed us. We can't continue to play the way we did. We just played to score."

Miami took its biggest lead at 73-51 when Austin dunked off a fast-break pass from Hardaway with 2:37 left in the third. The Heat did not make a field goal in the final five minutes of the fourth, and Lee Mayberry's two free throws capped a 13-4 burst to cut the deficit to 92-87 with 52 seconds left.

"We missed a lot of shots, wide-open three's and two's," said Hardaway. "But we're going make those over the course of this trip. The defense got us the win tonight. We played physical, very, very strong and good defense and they'll learn how to play that way some day.

The Grizzlies held their last lead, 22-21, when Abdur-Rahim hit a 14-footer with 42 seconds left in the first quarter. Hardaway hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to give the Heat a 23-22 edge.
