GAME RECAP

Jayson Williams and Sherman Douglas scored 23 points apiece as the New Jersey Nets posted a 81-68 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, who matched a franchise low for points.

Williams added 14 rebounds and Douglas dished out 11 assists as the Nets used a 22-8 burst to close the first half for a 53-37 lead. New Jersey won its second straight road game after dropping eight of its previous nine away from home.

"The coffee is definitely better in Charlotte," Williams said. "These were two great road games for me and my teammates. I came in with a lot of energy and that was the key to my success tonight. People started to let me know that I needed to step up my energy level on the road so I stepped up my energy level."

Anthony Mason scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Hornets, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Charlotte's 68 points matched its lowest output, previously established April 9th, 1995 at Indiana.

Glen Rice, sixth in the NBA in scoring at 22.7 points per game, was held to 10 points, all in the first half. He finished a woeful 3-of-17 from the floor, including misses on all six three-point attempts.

Douglas scored nine points and Williams eight as the Nets held a 25-23 lead after the first quarter. The Nets had a 31-29 lead with 8:30 remaining in the second before breaking open the game with a 22-8 spurt to close the half.

Kendall Gill scored scored 15 of his 19 points in the burst, including nine in a row as the Nets opened up a 16-point halftime advantage.

"I am not into the emotional stuff like I have been in the past," said Gill, who had two stints with the Hornets. "It feels good to win back-to-back road games. It seems that we are starting to learn to hang onto games when we are in the lead. This team is mature."

Douglas, starting for the second straight game in place of the injured Sam Cassell, had 14 points in the opening half. Cassell missed his second straight game with neck spasms.

The Nets led 61-46 with 3:40 left in the third quarter and a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws from Lucious Harris, gave New Jersey its biggest lead at 68-46 with 2:09 left in the quarter. The teams combined for only 28 points in the period which saw the Nets take a 68-50 lead into the final 12 minutes.

B.J. Armstrong scored seven points in a 16-8 burst that started the final quarter and pulled the Hornets within 76-66 with 4:44 to play. But Charlotte got no closer the rest of the way, managing just two points.

Armstrong and rookie Travis Williams finished with 11 points apiece for the Hornets, who also had a four-game winning streak against New Jersey snapped.

New Jersey shot 46 percent (31-of-68) from the field, while limiting Charlotte to just 36 percent (27-of-75) from the floor.

Nets rookie and leading scorer Keith Van Horn was held to a season-low three points in 24 minutes. The rookie, who was averaging 20.3 points, had scored in double figures in each of his first 18 games.

Charlotte guard Bobby Phills suffered a strained left groin in the first quarter and did not return.
