GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 40 points for the sixth time this season, scorching Gary Payton, as the Chicago Bulls avenged one of their toughest losses of the season with a 101-91 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.

Jordan made 12-of-27 shots from the field but was 16-of-18 from the line as he turned the highly anticipated matchup between the top teams in each conference into no contest. Dennis Rodman added 17 rebounds and six assists for the Bulls, who lost 91-90 to the SuperSonics in Seattle on November 25th.

"I think Seattle's a confident team," said Jordan. "I know we're a confident team. Right now it doesn't matter which team thinks they're best. We just want to be the team left standing after the NBA Finals are over. Tonight I thought they gave us a good run. We had good defesne, even though our shooting wasn't that good. They're a good young team and will be tough at the end of the season."

"It's too early in the season to look at this as a matchup of NBA Finals teams," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "We know they played really well in a long stretch. They will be jostling with a couple of other clubs in the West to see who ends up with the best record."

Payton, the 1996 Defensive Player of the Year who guarded Jordan most of the contest, scored 22 points for Seattle, which has lost six straight games in Chicago, including all three in the 1996 NBA Finals.

Vin Baker, who made the game-winning shot in Seattle's win over Chicago in November, added 21 points but was awful from the line, making just 3-of-12 shots. Seattle hit just 28-of-42 free throws and was outrebounded, 48-36.

"My free throw shooting tonight was disappointing," said Baker. "It's just something I have to try and mentally block out and move on. The foul shots that we missed in the second quarter had a lot to do with our loss."

"We helped defeat ourselves tonight," said Seattle coach George Karl. "When we got to the free throw line, we didn't make our shots. We also let Chicago outrun us and outhustle us. Tonight we just didn't show enough energy to make a good run at it. There's still a long way to go in the season. I've said all along that Chicago, with Pippen, is a clearcut leader in the East. We'll just have to see how it plays out in the end."

Scottie Pippen had 11 points for the Bulls, who have won 15 straight at the United Center and lead the league with a 19-1 home mark.

Chicago led 69-59 with 3:57 left in the third quarter when Jordan hit a basket to ignite an 11-4 spurt. Toni Kukoc had five points during the run, capped by Ron Harper's layup with 78 seconds left.

The Bulls pushed the lead to as many as 17 points in the as the Sonics capped their Eastern road trip at 2-2. Jordan, who has had five of his 40-point efforts in the last three weeks, has scored less than 26 just once since December 27th.

"Michael had another big game while being sick (flu)," added Jackson. "MJ was limited in one area, his offense. His defense was good, but he was not all over the court on offense like he usually is."

Jordan had 12 points in the opening quarter, keeping Chicago close. The Bulls began the second quarter with a 7-2 burst to grab a 36-32 lead, but a pair of free throws by Hersey Hawkins knotted the score at 44-44 with 3:39 to go before halftime.

Chicago closed the period with a 12-2 burst that included six points, two rebounds and a block by Jason Caffey. Jordan had 21 and Pippen nine at the break.

Kukoc finished with 10 points and Caffey added nine off the bench for Chicago, which got 32 points from its reserves. The Bulls were 1-of-12 from three-point range while Seattle was 3-of-14 from behind the arc.
