GAME RECAP

The Denver Nuggets matched the longest losing streak in the NBA this season and extended their franchise record with their 17th consecutive setback, 98-84 to the Orlando Magic, who had seven players in double figures.

The Toronto Raptors dropped 17 straight games from November 6th-December 9th. Prior to this season, Denver's longest losing streak was 14 games.

The defeat also established a franchise record for consecutive home losses for the Nuggets, who have dropped seven in a row at McNichols Arena. Denver, with an NBA-worst 2-32 record, had lost six straight home games twice before, during the 1991-92 campaign and also last season.

Horace Grant scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds and Mark Price added 15 points for Orlando, which beat Denver for the fourth straight time as it began a five-game road trip. Darrell Armstrong chipped in with nine assists.

"When Doug Moe was coach here, they just ran the ball down our throat. They also had two or three All-Star caliber players then. Denver played very hard tonight and we had to work for the victory," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly. "They're on the right track here. I saved Gerald Wilkins for the second half and he basically won the game for us. We're a decent rebounding club, and fortunately, we got enough tonight to win."

LaPhonso Ellis scored 16 points and Dean Garrett a season-high 15 to lead the Nuggets. Rookie Bobby Jackson added 13 points and a season-high 10 assists.

Orlando outrebounded Denver 35-23, with the Nuggets' rebound total setting an all-time franchise low. The Magic also outshot the Nuggets from three-point range, 55 percent (6-for-11) to 13 percent (1-for-8).

"They shot the lights out. Price hurt us and then Wilkins came in and hurt us. I thought our effort was good and we kept battling back," said Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "We don't have much margin for error and we had some turnovers that hurt us. We know that we have to play extremely well with a lot of effort to win."

The Magic owned a 60-53 lead at halftime, but the Nuggets fought back to take a 66-65 lead with 3:03 left in the third quarter after Garrett connected on a 17-footer.

It took Orlando only 19 seconds to regain the lead for good, 67-66, when Danny Schayes sank two free throws. The Magic extended the lead to five points by the end of the quarter off Wilkins' layup and a three-pointer by Price. Wilkins had all 11 of his points in 15 minutes off the bench in the second half.

Denver reduced the deficit to four points, 77-73, with 8:43 remaining following a hook shot by Joe Wolf, but the Magic established a double-digit lead for good when Grant connected on a 16-footer, making it 90-80 with 4:07 left.

"It's sad and disappointing to lose, but it's encouraging with all the assists we had from our ball movement. We just have to tighten up our defense and make the proper adjustments during the game," said Ellis. "Everything's coming back for me as I'm getting in shape and shooting with a lot of confidence."

Rookie Tony Battie scored 10 points in the first quarter to help give Denver a 26-25 lead. Orlando regained the lead, 37-36, with 5:49 left in the second quarter after Brian Evans hit a single free throw.
