GAME RECAP

Charles Barkley returned from a toe injury to collect 13 points, 17 rebounds and an ejection as the hot-shooting Houston Rockets snapped a four-game home losing streak with a 100-87 victory over the woeful Dallas Mavericks.

Barkley had missed two games with a hematoma in the middle toe on his right foot but returned to provide an All-Star presence for the banged-up Rockets, who have fellow All-Stars Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler on the injured list.

Early in the third quarter, Barkley drew a fourth foul on Dallas center Shawn Bradley, which changed the momentum of the game. With 4:24 remaining in the contest, Barkley argued a referee's call and slammed the ball to the floor, drawing a technical foul and an ejection.

Kevin Willis scored 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Rockets, who shot 55 percent (23-of-42) from the field in the second half and snapped an overall three-game slide. The home losing streak was Houston's longest since dropping six in a row from March 16th-30th, 1996.

"Obviously, this is a very big victory for us," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We had to work real hard to get it and in first half we couldn't find the basket at all. But we came out and shot real well in the second half. I told the guys at halftime to have confidence in their shots because the shots were there."

Samaki Walker had a career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have lost 18 of 19 overall and 14 in a row on the road. Dallas has dropped the last seven meetings with Houston.

"That was definitely the most number of shots I've ever taken in a game," said Walker, who was 10-of-20 from the field. "I was feeling it early and they kept going to me."

Walker scored 17 points in the first half as the Mavs opened a 41-37 lead. A free throw by A.C. Green extended the advantage to 48-42 with 8:57 remaining in the third quarter before Bradley picked up his third and fourth fouls and went to the bench with 8:35 to go.

"It was frustrating," Bradley said. "The ref told me not to go for the head fakes but I thought I didn't. They did what they wanted to do. Kevin Willis told the ref that he was going to do something to me if they didn't make some calls. Then he almost took my head off. I've got to find a way to play through stuff like that."

Barkley's two free throws began an 8-0 burst capped by a layup by Willis that gave the Rockets a 50-48 edge with 7:08 to go.

Later in the period, Brent Price scored five points in a 12-4 burst that was completed by a three-pointer by Emanual Davis, giving Houston a 67-59 lead with 49 seconds remaining.

Two free throws by Walker cut the deficit to 69-66 early in the fourth quarter before Willis scored four points in an 11-0 spree, including a dunk that extended the lead to 80-69 with 7:47 left in the contest.

"Either they did something better or we failed in our execution," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "I thought we played well but we started hanging our heads to quickly."

Matt Bullard scored 15 points, Mario Elie 14 and Price 10 for the Rockets, who had all five starters in double figures and shot 43 percent (35-of-81) from the field. They held a 52-42 rebounding edge.

"I just want to savor this moment and get back to work," Price said. "We've got a lot of guys playing who have not been out there together. We need to stay patient and keep working."

Michael Finley scored 16 points and Dennis Scott 14 for the Mavs, who shot 40 percent (32-of-80), but just 5-of-20 from three-point range. Houston was 8-of-21 from behind the arc.
