GAME RECAP

Reggie Miller scored 25 points, including a key three-pointer with 26 seconds to go, as the Indiana Pacers overcame a season-high 37 points by Grant Hill for a 100-93 victory over the Detroit Pistons, their third straight win.

The Pistons had closed to 96-93 with 46 seconds remaining on a jumper by Hill, who fell one point shy of his career high. But on the next possession, Miller drained a three-pointer over Joe Dumars with the shot clock winding down, sealing the win.

"We wanted to go to him and he sprung open," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We want to get the play in his hands as much as possible."

Mark Jackson had 16 points, 11 assists and two crucial baskets down the stretch for the Pacers, who are 5-1 in January and won both of their home games against the Pistons this season. Last season, Detroit won both visits to Indiana.

"I thought Mark played fabulously," Bird said. "It's up to Mark and Reggie to get these guys going. He (Jackson) came out tough, aggressive and looked for his shot. Overall, I thought he played a great game."

"Larry talked to Reggie and myself tonight prior to the game and emphasized how important this game was," Jackson said. "I respect the fact that he talked to us about it and it was dropped."

Dumars scored 23 points for the Pistons (17-19), who had won two in a row but failed in a bid to reach .500 for the first time since November 5th. Hill shot 15-of-29 from the field and added seven rebounds, six steals and five assists, but missed a late free throw.

"We played hard and a good game against a good team," Hill said. "When it was all said and done it was how we played down the stretch."

"There's not much you can do," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "He's quick, he'll slash and he gets to the line."

A layup by Hill gave Detroit its last tie at 85-85 with 5:01 to play. But Rik Smits made a hook shot and Chris Mullin drilled a three-pointer to give Indiana a 90-85 bulge with 3:37 remaining. Smits and Mullin each scored 16 points.

Dumars countered with a jumper and Smits made two free throws before Detroit's Grant Long made 1-of-2 from the line to cut the deficit to 92-88 with 2:42 left.

But Jackson made a runner, and after a tip-in by Detroit's Eric Montross, Hill, who was 7-of-11 from the line, split a pair with with 1:15 to go, making it 94-91. Jackson made another jumper 13 seconds later.

"We fought hard and made big shots, but they made critical shots when they had to," Pistons coach Doug Collins said. "But we came out flat against a good team, and in a big game and on the road, you can't play uphill or it will cost you."

The Pacers shot 49 percent (32-of-65) from the field and held a 40-35 rebounding edge, overcoming a season-high 26 turnovers.

Brian Williams collected 10 points and seven rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 44 percent (36-of-81) but made just 1-of-8 three-pointers. Indiana was 8-of-22 from behind the arc.

Mullin made a pair of three-pointers and scored 10 points as the Pacers sprinted to a 30-17 lead on a layup by Derrick McKey with 1:30 left in the first quarter.

But Hill had seven points in the next 90 seconds before taking over in the second quarter, when Indiana hit just 5-of-13 shots. He scored six points and had two steals in an early surge and added five more as the half closed, including a 16-footer just before the buzzer that gave Detroit a 51-49 lead.

"Grant Hill is a clever ballplayer," Mullin said. "You can't stop his shots. One guy cannot guard him. We have to treat it as a team defense. We know that he can do it all and we just have to turn our defense up a little notches."

Hill scored 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting in the first half but was limited to four points in the third quarter, when Indiana regained the lead. Miller scored five points in a 13-2 spurt that opened the second half and gave the Pacers a 62-53 lead with 10:10 left. Dumars scored eight points in the period, which ended with Indiana holding a 76-73 lead.
