GAME RECAP

Danny Manning scored 23 points to pace five players in double figures as the Phoenix Suns posted their most lopsided win of the season with a 111-86 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Cliff Robinson added 17 points and Steve Nash 16 for the Suns, whose 25-point margin of victory was their largest this season, surpassing their 107-85 rout of of Vancouver on December 9th.

Nash, who handed out nine assists and grabbed six rebounds, scored nine of his points during a 19-6 run that closed out the first half, turning a 41-37 Suns lead into a 60-43 bulge.

"I thought both teams played very badly in the first quarter," said Suns coach Danny Ainge. "But in the second, Manning, Nash and Hot Rod (John Williams) really gave a boost off the bench. Nash played great tonight, the way he ran the offense."

Rony Seikaly scored 20 points for Orlando, which has dropped 12 of its last 16 games since moving a season-high nine games over .500 on December 11th. The Magic fell to 1-2 on their current five-game road trip.

The Suns avoided matching a season-high three-game losing streak. Phoenix dropped three straight on the road from December 13th-16th.

"Coming off two consecutive losses, it was very important for us to get this victory," said Manning. "We've been struggling from the field of late and we just needed to make some shots tonight."

After taking a 29-25 lead after one quarter, Phoenix shot a torrid 60 percent (12-of-20) in the second compared to Orlando's 40 percent (8-of-20). Manning scored five points during the period that saw the Suns outscore the Magic, 31-18.

The teams traded baskets throughout most of the third quarter until the Suns ran off a 8-1 spurt in the final two minutes. Manning gave the Suns an 79-57 advantage with a jump shot and Cedric Ceballos followed with two foul shots. Manning scored on a tip-in and Robinson capped the spurt with two from the line at the 16-second mark for an 85-58 lead.

The Magic scored just 15 points in the third period on 4-of-16 shooting. Orlando got seven rebounds from guard Darrell Armstrong and suffered a 44-27 deficit on the boards.

"It was ugly, very ugly," said Seikaly. "They were making the kinds of shots you only see on SportsCenter."

Nash connected on seven of his eight field goals for Phoenix, which broke out of a recent scoring slump. The Suns hit 7-of-13 three-pointers and topped the 100-point mark for only the second time in eight games.

"We are not a great team, but we have been known as a team that at least played hard," Magic coach Chuck Daly said. "Tonight we were never in the game. It was a terrible performance."

The Suns lead the all-time series, 12-7, although the Magic have still won four of the last six games. Phoenix snapped a four-game losing streak against Orlando with a 121-85 win in the last meeting on March 9th, 1997, at America West Arena.
