GAME RECAP

Larry Johnson collected 24 points and 10 rebounds and Charlie Ward added a career-high 18 points to lead the New York Knicks to a 93-82 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Allan Houston chipped in 23 points for New York, which has alternated wins and losses in its last 15 games. The Knicks won for just the third time in their last 11 road games, but improved to 6-0 all-time at Toronto.

"Charlie definitely was the most valuable player today," said Houston. "What he did on (Damon) Stoudamire, ran him off picks. And he made great shots, especially late in the fourth. He was also able to grab rebounds. He did an all-around great job. This was an important road victory for us, a game we needed to win."

Marcus Camby recorded 22 points and six blocked shots and Doug Christie had 18 points for Toronto, which still has not won consecutive games this season. The Raptors had defeated the Knicks in their last encounter, 97-94 on December 27th, but are 1-9 all-time versus New York.

"They totally controlled the basket," said Camby. "When a shot went up, they had a body on us. Our transition defense wasn't all that great. We weren't finding the open shooter. I don't know how Allan Houston gets all alone in the corner. They played well, all down the board. We didn't expect Charlie Ward to come out and get a career high."

Johnson and Houston each had eight points in the first quarter as New York led 29-25, but Toronto rallied and assumed a 40-35 advantage on rookie Tracy McGrady's basket with 4:23 to go in the half.

Ward answered with back-to-back three-pointers that gave the Knicks the lead for good at 41-40 and began a 21-5 run that spilled over into the third period. The margin was 47-43 at the break and Houston's layup with 9:04 left extended the gap to 56-45.

"I got good looks," said Ward, who was 4-for-5 from long range. "I'm not a guy who creates his own shots. I create shots for other guys. But if you give enough, you receive."

The Raptors netted the final three points of the third quarter to close within 70-64 and Lloyd Daniels' lay-in capped what turned out to be a 10-2 spurt that reduced the deficit to 72-71 with 9:35 to play.

But Chris Mills responded with a layup 22 seconds later to tip off a 12-0 Knicks burst. John Starks scored five of his 12 points in the run, including a three-pointer with 5:44 remaining that made it 84-71.

Mills grabbed nine rebounds and Ward contributed six assists, five boards and four steals for New York, whose last four games were decided by a total of five points. The Knicks shot 45 percent (9-of-20) from three-point range and 89 percent (16-for-18) from the foul line.

"It was a hell of a road win," said Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy. "I thought we played extremely hard to beat them and outrebound them. We trapped him (Stoudamire) and made him become a passer. He is still a great player, you can't totally stop him, but we did contain him. Soon after Patrick (Ewing) went down, I had a talk with Charlie (Ward) about having to step up with his scoring. Today he did a great job."

Knicks forward Buck Williams was ejected 1:35 into the second quarter after receiving his second technical foul.

Damon Stoudamire totaled 16 points and 10 assists, while Carlos Rogers pulled down 11 caroms for the Raptors, who were 6-for-14 from three-point territory, but shot just 40.5 percent (30-of-74) from the floor.

"It was probably our doing rather than their doing in the second half," said Stoudamire. "They got a lot of open looks and we allowed them to do a lot of things they wanted to do. When we got them out of what they wanted to do, they didn't have much. We got it down to one, and then they got it back up again, and it was tough to get back."
