GAME RECAP

Chris Webber scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Juwan Howard added 21 points, leading the Washington Wizards to a 108-99 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Tracy Murray added 20 points and Rod Strickland 16 and seven assists for the Wizards, who won for the 13th time in 16 games at the new MCI Center. Washington began the season by losing all five of its home games at US Airways Arena.

It was Webber's sixth game of 30 points or more and his 12th in a row with 20 or more. Washington has won six of its last seven games against Los Angeles.

"Scoring doesn't mean a lot to me. Wins do. That's more important to me than scoring 30 points," said Webber. "It's nice to get the victory, especially after winning last night.

"I don't want to be in a fight this year for the last playoff spot. I want to know early on that we're in. And that's what I'm going to set as my goal."

Rodney Rogers paced the Clippers with 22 points, all in the first half. He left the game four minutes into the third quarter and did not return after being poked in the eye.

"I didn't think our defense was that bad. Rodney Rogers is a key player and we really missed him down the stretch," said Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch. "We have called his number a lot in the second half of games this season."

James Robinson added a season-high 20 points and Stojko Vrankovic grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds for Los Angeles, which was trying to win back-to-back road games for the first time this season. The Clippers won 119-116 at New Jersey on Thursday.

The Clippers outrebounded the Wizards, 36-34, but also committed 22 turnovers, leading to 30 Washington points.

"Our offense is working well. We just need to get working on the defensive end of the court," said Brent Barry, who scored 16 points. "Any time you lose anyone, it's going to hurt our team and we're going to have to pick it up."

Rogers scored 13 points in the first quarter as the Clippers grabbed a 33-26 lead. Murray had the hot hand in the second quarter with 14 points, includingb a jumper that gave the Wizards the lead for good at 39-37.

A three-pointer by Webber with 7:21 to go pushed the lead to 42-37. Washington increased its lead to 62-52 on a jumper by Howard with 58 seconds left in the half.

The Wizards' biggest lead of the second half was 83-67 with 2:38 remaining in the third quarter on a pair of free throws by Murray. The Clippers closed the period with an 8-2 burst, six by Robinson, to cut the deficit to 85-75.

Los Angeles pulled within six points twice in the final quarter, the last time at 105-99 on a dunk by Robinson with 1:28 to go.

"I didn't expect us to have this record at this point of the season. I thought out of camp that we'd be much better, but circumstances have dicated that we aren't there yet," said Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff, whose club is 21-20. "I keep telling them, it's not the Howard show, it's not the Strickland show, it's not the Webber show, it's the team. We'll start to put it together in the second half of the season."
