GAME RECAP

Gary Payton scored 13 of his 23 points in a lopsided third quarter as the Seattle SuperSonics posted their biggest victory of the season while handing the Houston Rockets their second-worst home loss in team history, 114-80.

Houston's starters were held to 40 points -- one more than the Sonics' bench players -- as the Rockets suffered their worst loss at home since a 136-80 defeat, also at the hands of Seattle, on December 6th, 1986. It was also Houston's worst defeat ever.

"We're just in a good groove right now," Payton said. "We've played the way we're supposed to play. The big thing is now we're playing that way on the road."

Vin Baker scored 15 of his 21 points and Payton added 10 in the first half, helping the Sonics to a 54-43 lead. Seattle broke free with a 12-2 run to start the third quarter, taking a 66-45 bulge on a three-pointer by Hersey Hawkins with eight minutes to go.

Payton, who along with the rest of the Sonics' starters was pulled after three quarters, was 9-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. Detlef Schrempf netted 13 points and reserve David Wingate had nine for Seattle, which sank 9-of-18 from behind the arc.

Hawkins scored 14 points for Seattle, which shot 58 percent (43-of-74) and posted its biggest road win since a 126-89 victory over Golden State on March 25th of last season. The Sonics shot a blistering 75 percent (15-of-20) as they outscored the Rockets 35-17 in the third period.

We're giving up 50 percent from the field," said Houston's Mario Elie, who was held to two points. "That's not Rockets' basketball. People are coming in here like it's their home, that's very frustrating."

Eddie Johnson scored 17 points off the bench and Kevin Willis 13 for Houston, which suffered a 111-84 home loss to the Jazz on January 10th. The Rockets have lost their last two games to Seattle by a combined 64 points.

Matt Maloney totaled 13 points as the Rockets hit 34 percent (29-of-85) from the floor, missing 16 of 20 three-pointers. Charles Barkley was limited to 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting. He did grab nine rebounds, the only category that Houston managed to come out on top, 44-39.

"They are impressive, quite impressive," praised Barkley. "They are the best team we've played this year. Gary makes them go. Other than Michael (Jordan), he's the best.

"I don't think we really believe we can win," Barkley added. "I think we want to win, but we don't believe (we can)."

The Sonics, who built on their lead in each period, jumped out to a 29-20 edge after one. Payton and Baker had eight points apiece in the quarter for Seattle, which took control for good with a 12-2 run that gave it a 27-13 lead with three minutes to go.

The SuperSonics (32-8) bettered by one victory -- 31-9 in 1993-94 season -- their best-ever record after 40 games. Seattle has won three straight, 11 of 13, and 17 of its past 20 games.

"I'm getting over the surprise element (of Seattle's play)," said Baker. "At first, I was surprised at our start, but now we've seen how good we are and how good we can be."

By contrast, the Rockets have dropped three straight and six of seven contests to fall to 18-18, 7 1/2 games behind first-place Utah in the Midwest Division.
