GAME RECAP

Kobe Bryant had a crucial tip-in in the final minute and added two free throws with 7.7 seconds left as the Los Angeles Lakers won their third straight game, 92-89 over the struggling Orlando Magic.

Shaquille O'Neal had 35 points, 15 rebounds and a season-high seven blocks for the Lakers, who moved a season-high 21 games over .500 (30-9). Bryant finished with 16 points and Nick Van Exel added 15.

"We just played to their level and they played harder," said O'Neal. "If we want to go forward we have to play smarter. Guys need to look in the mirror. If they think they are playing hard they are not. They know what they have to do."

"Obviously it was a good win," said Lakers coach Del Harris. "We did it the hard way. When you lose the rebounding game and shoot 58 percent from the free-throw line and 40 percent from the field it is tough to win games."

Los Angeles led 87-86 when Robert Horry stole an inbounds pass and was fouled. Just a 66 percent free throw shooter, Horry had made 13-of-15 over his last six games. He missed both but on the second attempt, Bryant beat Danny Schayes to the hoop and tapped the ball in for an 89-86 advantage with 30 seconds to go.

"Fortunately I was able to time it right," said Bryant. "I was able to slip in front of him. I put my hand on the ball and it went in."

Darrell Armstrong scored a career-high 24 points and barely missed a triple-double for Orlando (20-21), which dropped its fourth straight and fell below .500 since November 7th, when it was 2-3. Horace Grant scored 15 points for the Magic but missed a key free throw with 8.9 seconds to go that would have tied the contest.

"Frankly, we had a wonderful opportunity to win a big game," said Orlando coach Chuck Daly. "But we made mistakes at the end. A box-out at the line and a missed free throw. I get a little bit tired of telling what a great effort they had and them coming up short. It is not good enough."

O'Neal had 15 points in the third quarter as Los Angeles opened a 75-67 edge. But the Magic began the fourth quarter with a 14-5 burst to take an 81-80 lead with five minutes left.

Eddie Jones put the Lakers on top 82-81 with a 16-footer with 3:25 to go but Schayes hit a jumper to give Orlando its last lead. Van Exel followed with his fourth three-pointer of the game and O'Neal added a dunk to push the lead to 87-83. But Armstrong sank two free throws with 92 seconds left.

After an exchange of misses, Schayes drew a foul on O'Neal but was able to make just 1-of-2 from the line. His second attempt went off the front of the rim and out of bounds off O'Neal. Jones came up with a block on the ensuing possession and when Orlando attempted the inbounds pass, Horry stole the ball.

After Bryant's tip put Los Angeles ahead 89-86, Armstrong sank two free throws with 22 seconds left. Van Exel immediately was fouled but made just one shot. Grant was fouled, but the 68 percent free throw shooter missed his first attempt. He made the second to draw the Magic within 90-89 but Bryant, who has made 41 of his last 44 from the line, made his free throws to push the lead to three.

Armstrong's desperation attempt at the buzzer was not close as Orlando lost for the 14th time in 18 games.

The Magic held a 46-34 advantage on the boards but made just 16-of-25 free throws and committed 21 turnovers. Los Angeles was even worse from the line, making just 17-of-29, although Bryant was 7-of-7.

Armstrong scored 12 points in the first half as Orlando opened a 46-41 lead. But O'Neal scored 15 in the third quarter as Los Angeles surged to a 75-67 advantage entering the final period.
