GAME RECAP

Erick Strickland scored a career-high 30 points and Michael Finley added 29 as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Seattle SuperSonics for the second time this season, 107-98.

Khalid Reeves tallied 14 points and Samaki Walker grabbed nine rebounds for Dallas, which stopped a five-game losing streak and won for just the second time in its last 22 games. The Mavericks, who shot 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from three-point range, posted an an 89-81 victory at Seattle on November 1st. Dallas won its following game to improve to 3-0 but lost 32 of its next 35 games before tonight.

"We've been plaing very well lately, we just haven't been able to finish games," Strickland said. "I'm glad we can (could) finish it out tonight. We were very happy to finish the game. We executed when we needed to, we didn't panic under pressure and we stayed aggressive defensively. We took it straight at them and got the fouls."

Detlef Schrempf had 21 points and nine rebounds and Gary Payton recorded 20 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Seattle, which was coming off its biggest win in almost 10 months -- a 114-80 romp over the Houston Rockets on Monday. The SuperSonics, who have the best record in basketball, had won 13 of the last 16 meetings with the Mavericks prior to this season.

The Mavericks made at least half of their shots from the field for just the second time this season, shooting 54 percent (43-for-80).

"They played a great game tonight," said Seattle coach George Karl about Dallas. "The way they played in the first half, they made shots against good defense and they mad shots against bad defense. We made a great effort I thought, made some runs. But we didnt make enough shots."

Sam Perkins, who had eight points off the bench, gave the Sonics a 29-28 edge with 38 seconds left in the first quarter. Vin Baker, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds, made a free throw to give Seattle a 30-28 lead with five seconds left in the first. But Strickland hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc at the buzzer to give the Mavericks the lead for good, 31-30.

"He's a kid we've never seen have a game like he did tonight," Karl said of Strickland. "He had an opportunity and made big shots."

Seattle stayed close throughout the second period and David Wingate's jumper cut Dallas' lead to 58-54 with 1:38 left in the first half. The Mavericks scored the final seven points of the second as Khalid Reeves made a three-pointer and a jumper before Strickland sank a basket from the right side with 19 seconds to go.

Dallas took its biggest lead of the game at 74-58 when Finley made a three-pointer with 8:25 remaining in the third. Seattle came back with a 12-3 burst, capped by Payton's layup that made it 77-70 with 4:09 left. But the Mavericks scored six straight points, taking an 83-70 lead when Finley made a jumper with 2:42 to go.

The Mavericks held an 88-76 lead at the end of the third and Finley opened the fourth with a jumper. Seattle managed a 10-2 run, capped by Payton's jumper with 5:17 to play. But the Mavs scored seven straight points, taking a 99-86 lead when Strickland converted two free throws with 3:49 remaining.

"We certainly deserve a win," said Dallas coach Don Nelson. "We've been close and we've been playing great. We finally didn't fold in the fourth quarter, the bottom line is we defended them very well and when they had to make some shots they missed a couple. I was really happy with the performance of everybody that played."
