GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 33 points and Luc Longley pulled down 13 rebounds, carrying the Chicago Bulls to their 17th straight home win, a 110-79 rout of the Charlotte Hornets.

Scottie Pippen added 14 points and seven assists and Randy Brown had 10 points for the Bulls, who have won three straight overall and own the league's best home record at 21-1. Chicago's lone home loss was a 90-83 setback to Washington on November 12th.

"We're getting close to where we used to be, but we really don't want to play our best basketball now, because you don't want to peak in the middle of the year," Jordan said. "We've played good basketball for certain segments of games, but we really haven't played complete games yet. People might say we're the best team, but our record indicates that we're only a good team among other good teams."

Chicago, which played without Dennis Rodman, who is sidelined by a stomach flu, moved 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Indiana in the Central Division. The Pacers were beaten at New York, 97-89.

David Wesley had 18 points and five assists and Matt Geiger contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Hornets, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Geiger started in place of Vlade Divac, who had knee surgery Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks. Charlotte also played without Bobby Phills and Dell Curry, both sidelined by injuries.

The Bulls limited Charlotte to 38 percent (32-for-85) shooting while hitting 50 percent (45-for-90) of their own shots. Chicago also outrebounded the Hornets 45-43, and turned 20 turnovers into 29 points.

"We did three things right tonight," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "We made a run at the Bulls, we made sure Glen (Rice) kept his streak of double-digit games (118) going, and more importantly for the Chicago fans, we got everybody in the building free tacos (when the Bulls score at least 110 points).

"It's tough to play shorthanded, especially against a team like Chicago," he continued. "Every time we thought we'd get a run going, Michael would hit a tough shot. When we did start to make any type of headway, they just came back and put it in our face. I think the key was too many turnovers. Against a world championship team, you don't turn the ball over that frequently and win."

Rice missed 14-of-18 field gaol attempts and finished with just 10 points.

"I missed a couple of shots at the beginning of the game, then I got into a negative frame of mind," Rice said. "I can't afford to lose my confidence, but I started second-guessing myself and hesitating with my shot. I let the Bulls and their arena get to me."

Jordan scored 20 of his points in the first half to help stake the Bulls to a 52-39 lead at the break.

Following a basket by Jordan at the 9:37 mark of the third quarter, the Bulls stretched their to 58-41.

Charlotte answered with a 9-0 run, with Wesley contributing eight points, to cut the deficit to 58-50 with 7:05 left in the quarter.

Two minutes later Chicago put together another burst, 9-2, with Longley scoring four points to make it 67-52. The Bulls pulled away for good by closing out the third quarter on a 13-4 spurt, with Jordan scoring five points.

Jordan and Ron Harper sat out the fourth quarter and Pippen only played the first six minutes.

"I thought that was a pretty ragged game until our bench got in there and did some good work," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "Obviously, Charlotte is playing without a lot of their important players and we were able to take advantage of it.

"We have to be glad with what we've accomplished so far this season. I think we can be a much better team and the players know that. We need to strive to accomplish that (better play) in the second half of the season."
