GAME RECAP

Kevin Garnett scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half as the Minnesota Timberwolves extended their franchise-record winning streak to seven games with a 104-95 victory over the struggling Boston Celtics.

Tom Hammonds added a season-high 19 points for Minnesota, which also improved to a franchise-best seven games over .500 at 23-16. Last season, the Timberwolves did not record their 23rd win until February 6th.

Antoine Walker scored 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Celtics, who lost for the eighth time in their last nine games and fell a season-high six games under .500.

The game was close throughout the opening half, with the biggest lead being five points by the Timberwolves at 35-30 in the second quarter following a basket by Garnett. Boston closed the half on a 12-5 run to take a 42-40 lead at intermission.

Walter McCarty's three-pointer with 8:09 left in the third quarter gave the Celtics their biggest lead at 55-48. But Minnesota responded with a 10-1 burst, capped by one free throw by Hammonds for a 58-56 lead with 4:52 to play in the quarter.

With game tied 66-66, the Wolves went ahead for good when Terry Porter sank three consecutive free throws after he was fouled while attempting a three-pointer with 74 seconds to go in the quarter. Porter finished with 16 points and 11 assists. He sank all 10 of his free-throw attempts.

Boston trailed the entire way in the final period, but did draw within 90-89 with 3:01 to play on Dana Barros' three-pointer. But Tom Gugliotta scored four straight points for a 94-89 lead with 1:43 left.

"It was a close ballgame, but we didn't do the right things down the stretch to win the game," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "To say I am unhappy with this team of late is an understatement."

Barros finished with 16 points and Dee Brown added 15 to lead the Boston reserves.

Gugliotta finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Stephon Marbury had 18 points for the Wolves, who split the season series with Boston.

"We did it again. Right now we're playing at a high level," Marbury said. "When you're winning, you know you're going to win. You just get that feeling at the end of the game."

McCarty's jumper cut the deficit to 94-91, but Porter sank two free throws and Hammonds had a dunk for a 98-91 cushion with 28 seconds to go.

"We hung in there. I thought we did a good job against their pressure -- we only turned the ball over 13 times," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "Overall, we kept our poise and got a good spurt and made some plays. We had solid defense in the fourth quarter when we went to our halfcourt trap. It really changed the whole tempo of the game."

The Timberwolves shot 48 percent (32-of-67) from the field, but did most of their damage from the free throw line where they connected on 39-of-48 attempts. Boston shot percent (37-of-89) from the floor.
