GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker scored 19 points, including the go-ahead basket with 32 seconds left, as the Boston Celtics blew a 22-point lead before notching an 89-85 victory over the Atlanta Hawks that snapped a three-game losing streak.

Rookies Chauncey Billups and Ron Mercer added 18 and 14 points, respectively, for the Celtics, who won in Atlanta for the first time since March 26th, 1993. Boston, which had lost eight straight visits to Atlanta, beat the Hawks for just the third time in the last 17 meetings.

"We needed a win, we've been on a losing streak against good teams," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "To come in here and play a very experienced Hawks club and to do many good things defensively and continue to play strong defense down the stretch was big for us."

Steve Smith scored 21 points for the Hawks, who could not overcome another slow start. Atlanta, which managed just 30 points in the first half of Wednesday's loss at San Antonio, had just 33 at the break tonight.

The Celtics held a 49-33 halftime lead and scored the first six points of the third quarter, opening their largest lead at 55-33 on Billups' layup with 10:27 remaining in the period. But the Hawks closed the quarter with a 19-8 burst, closing to 72-63 when Alan Henderson tipped in a miss to end the period.

"You definitely can't let a team get you down 20, 25 points," Henderson said. "I don't know how much we were down, that just makes it too hard to come back. You expend so much energy getting back in the game, then down the stretch the legs are a little bit gone. We came out in slow motion in the first half and the first part of the third quarter. You can't do that in this league and expect to win games."

A layup by Christian Laettner cut Boston's lead to 74-67 and ignited a 14-5 surge. Henderson dunked and Smith nailed a three-pointer to bring Atlanta within 78-77 with 7:08 to play. Billups answered with a free throw, but Dikembe Mutombo dunked to cap the run and forge a 79-79 tie with 6:01 to play.

Atlanta finally grabbed the lead at 85-83 on Smith's jumper with 1:06 remaining before Mercer and Walker made big plays down the stretch. Mercer hit a pair of free throws to tie the game with 59 seconds left, and on Atlanta's next possession, he tied up Tyrone Corbin for a jump ball.

Mercer tipped the ball to Walker, who took it downcourt for a layup and an 87-85 lead with 32 seconds to go. Smith missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer before Billups closed the game by hitting two free throws in the final 10 seconds.

"I knew we were gonna win the tip because he can out-jump Tyrone Corbin, so I knew that he could get the tip," Walker said. "If I got the ball, I knew I was gonna be aggressive and attack the basket and go with it because the court was open. They played it like Tyrone was gonna win the tip and Ron just got up and got it. I knew Ron could out-jump him, I just told him to tip it my way."

Walker had 10 points in the first quarter, helping the Celtics to a 24-19 lead. Boston began to pull away midway through the second period, when Mercer's layup started a 9-0 burst. Dana Barros' three-pointer capped it and gave Boston a 38-23 cushion with 6:09 remaining in the half.

Barros was 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from the line to finish with 13 points for the Celtics, who shot 45 percent (35-of-78) from the field.

Henderson and Laettner scored 15 points apiece while Mutombo and Mookie Blaylock each added 11 for Atlanta, which shot 42 percent (30-of-71) and committed a season-high 25 turnovers, leading to 24 points. Corbin chipped in with 10 points as the Hawks fell to 3-6 when putting all five starters in double figures.

The game drew 31,820 fans to the Georgia Dome, Atlanta's second-largest crowd of the season.
