GAME RECAP

Clyde Drexler had 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds and Charles Barkley added 21 points as the Houston Rockets ended their longest losing streak of the season and gave coach Rudy Tomjanovich his 300th career win with a 112-87 rout of the San Antonio Spurs.

Tomjanovich, in his seventh season behind the Rockets' bench, improved to 300-179 while becoming the ninth-fastest coach ever to reach the 300-win plateau. He won NBA championships in 1994 and 1995.

"It couldn't have come at a better time, or against a greater team," said Tomjanovich. "There's been a lot of negativity around us lately. But hopefully, this is the start of something good for us."

Barkley scored six points as the Rockets left the Spurs behind for good with a 15-4 second-quarter burst that opened a 57-46 lead at halftime.

"I'm just going to have fun for the rest of the season," said Barkley. "I don't care if we win another game, I'm just going to have fun. I don't know why we played well tonight, I'm at a loss. We just had a great game."

Kevin Willis, who has been publicly dangled as proposed trade bait in exchange for Toronto guard Damon Stoudamire, had 14 points and six rebounds while working against seven-footers David Robinson and Tim Duncan before being ejected in the second quarter for arguing with officials.

Houston's aging front line crushed San Antonio on the glass, grabbing 41 boards while holding the Spurs to a season-low 25. It was a team effort for Houston, which got seven rebounds from Barkley, five from Matt Bullard and five more to go along with 12 points from reserve center Othella Harrington.

"A great team effort against a very good team," said Tomjanovich. "They started a big lineup and I thought we matched their strength and did a real good job on the boards. The ball was moving around well and we played with aggressiveness."

Without Willis, Drexler and Barkley carried Houston, which ended a five-game skid with its first victory of the month against a winning team. The slide was the team's longest since January 25th-February 6th of last season, when it dropped six in a row.

Robinson totaled 16 points and rookie Duncan added 15 but just three rebounds for the Spurs, who hold a slim half-game lead over the second-place Jazz in the Midwest Division.

"They came right at me, there were really no disguises in what they did," Duncan said. "I just didn't handle it well. I played a pretty bad game all-around."

Will Perdue had 12 points and a team-leading nine rebounds, while Robinson was limited to six boards for the Spurs, who hit 50 percent (38-of-76) from the field but just 10-of-19 from the line.

Robinson was the main offender from the stripe, missing 7-of-9 attempts, including four in one trip after being fouled and then selected to shoot the two technicals assessed to Willis.

San Antonio pulled even at 42-42 on a pair of free throws by Duncan with 4:20 left in the second quarter. But Barkley and Brent Price -- who had four of his nine points in the period-ending spurt -- boosted the Rockets to an 11-point halftime lead that the Spurs proved unable to cut into in the second half.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich also was a victim of the officials. Popovich was ejected after arguing a call and picking up two quick technicals with four seconds left in the first half.

"The first one was totally uncalled for, but the second technical was probably deserved," Popovich admitted. "Rudy got a 'T' and Willis got tossed. So I guess they had to even things out."
