GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 34 points and Avery Johnson added a season-high 27 and 11 assists as the San Antonio Spurs avenged one of their worst losses of the season with a 115-90 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Vinny Del Negro had 17 points and Will Perdue pulled down 14 rebounds for the Spurs, who won for the eighth time in 10 games and avenged Saturday's 112-87 defeat at Houston by the same margin.

"When you get beat, it's a challenge to your courage and tests you as a player," Robinson said. "Tonight was a good response to the whipping we took the other night."

Robinson scored six points and Del Negro added five as San Antonio used an 11-0 run to open a 78-62 bulge with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter.

It was the 14th straight home win for the Spurs, who went on to surpass the 100-point mark for the first time in nine games.

"We knew we have been playing well at home," said Johnson. "When you have a disappointing loss on the road, it just feels good to come home."

Charles Barkley totaled 19 points and 14 rebounds before being ejected with 5:50 to play for arguing a foul call. Eddie Johnson contributed 14 points and Kevin Willis 13 for the Rockets, who shot just 35 percent (30-of-86) from the field while losing for the sixth time in seven games.

"We got hammered here, they got hammered back in Houston," Barkley said. "They played well tonight. Avery had a great game and so did David."

Rookie Tim Duncan contributed 14 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and Robinson added a season-high six blocks for the Spurs, who were badly outplayed up front in Saturday's matchup.

San Antonio, whose trio of seven-footers was embarassed on the boards in Saturday's game, 41-25, bounced back to block 11 shots and lead the Spurs to a 48-38 rebounding edge.

The Rockets committed just 10 turnovers but were unable to keep up with San Antonio's hot shooting. Robinson missed only two of 15 shots and Johnson connected on 12-of-19 from the floor for the Spurs, who were 46-of-78 from the field (59 percent).

"I can't explain the turnaround," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We played absolutely no defense. They shot really well tonight, 59 percent in the first half, 59 in the second. You're not going to win many games (giving up) those statistics."

Houston, which has lost nine of its last 11 contests to fall nine games behind first-place Utah in the Midwest Division, took a 14-12 lead on a pair of free throws by Matt Maloney midway through the first period. But Robinson made a dunk before a short hook by Duncan put the Spurs ahead to stay.

The Rockets have lost five straight on the road.
