GAME RECAP

Glen Rice tied a season high with 42 points and Anthony Mason added 20, including the first three points of the second overtime, as the Charlotte Hornets outlasted the Phoenix Suns, 120-113.

The game was tied, 106-106, after the first extra session but the Hornets jumped out quickly in the second overtime as Mason made a layup and added a foul shot seconds later. Donald Royal's lay-in gave the Hornets a 111-106 advantage with 3:06 remaining.

Phoenix fought back within 111-109 on a three-pointer by Mark Bryant -- just the second of his 10-year career -- but Rice drilled a three-pointer and Matt Geiger made two free throws to give Charlotte control at 116-109 with 1:01 to go.

"Tonight was a good professional NBA basketball game," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "There was some big shots made on both sides. This is as good as it gets in the NBA. Glen (Rice) for us and Danny Manning for them. All of the shots were contested too. Any time we win a game like this it really makes you believe you can win against anybody."

Mason grabbed 13 rebounds and handed out six assists and Geiger also had 13 boards for the Hornets, who trailed for most of the game before taking an 86-85 lead with a 7-0 run midway through the fourth quarter.

Antonio McDyess scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Suns, who lost for only the second time in seven games and fell to 1-1 on their seven-game road trip.

David Wesley scored 13 points while handing out 10 assists and B.J. Armstrong added a season-high 13 points for the Hornets, who shot 42 percent (38-of-90) from the field and held a 52-46 rebounding advantage.

"We just kept with it," said Wesley. "We made shot after shot at the end. When Glen gets hot, it's nice for me to throw the ball to him. Mase (Anthony Mason) kept staying with it, kept banging and banging. We are not going to turn it in at anytime."

After taking the 86-85 advantage on two foul shots by Rice, the teams traded baskets down the stretch until Rex Chapman, who had 20 points and six assists, tied the contest, 94-94, on two free throws with 23.1 left in regulation.

The first overtime was also back and forth, Phoenix taking a 104-103 lead with 12.2 seconds left in the period on a 14-footer by Chapman. The Hornets ran the inbounds play for Rice, who promptly gave Charlotte a 106-104 advantage by draining a three-pointer from the left side.

It took the Suns just four seconds to re-tie the game as Danny Manning nailed a jumper from the left side for a 106-106 tie.

"This was a tough loss after coming off a win in Atlanta last night," Chapman said. "We missed some key opportunities to win this game. The Hornets made the better plays down the stretch. They wore us down in the fourth quarter. Rice was unbelievable down the stretch. He continued to make basket after basket down the stretch."

Rice, who was 15-of-29 from the field and hit 9-of-12 from the foul line, scored 13 of his points in the extra 10 minutes.

"I feel much better. My legs feel much stronger," said Rice. "I have to be creative and read the defense well. It was definitely a team thing tonight. We were very aggressive on both ends of the floor. It was a great job by the team overall."

Phoenix, which got 18 and 16 points from Steve Nash and Manning, respectively, shot 48 percent (47-of-98) from the floor despite hitting only 2-of-12 three-pointers. Bryant grabbed 12 rebounds for the Suns, who committed 15 turnovers leading to 23 Charlotte points.

Bryant and McDyess helped the Suns dominate in the paint, 58-36, although the Hornets held the upper hand in second-chance points, 22-16, due in large part to the six offense boards by Geiger.

"I have no complaints on our team's performance tonight," said McDyess. "This can wear on one's mental performance. You have to give the Hornets credit. Those guys came to play in the second half. Mason played very strong and aggressive defense in the second half.

The Hornets had 18 turnovers, but Phoenix was only able to capatalize for 16 points.

The teams traded the lead 15 times and the game was tied on eight different occassions.
