GAME RECAP

Michael Finley scored a career-high 39 points and tied a personal best with 11 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks scored the first five points of overtime and defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 84-77.

After Shawn Bradley opened the scoring in overtime with a pair of free throws with 3:48 to go, Finley hit a runner in the lane and was fouled. He made the free throw for an 80-75 lead with 56 seconds left.

Cleveland got a driving layup from rookie Derek Anderson with 37 seconds to go, but Finley sealed the victory with a jumper from the right elbow. He added two free throws in the final seconds to cap the scoring. Dallas was 2-of-9 from the field in the extra session while Cleveland was 1-for-7.

"I can't say that it was a fun game because overtime is not that much fun, but it was fun to win and hang in there and do some things down the stretch," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "We just kept our composure like we talked about in practice and found a way to win."

Finley's previous career high was 35 points, accomplished against the San Antonio Spurs on November 29th and the Houston Rockets one week later.

"I can't let that get in the way of what this team is trying to do," said Finley, when asked if was trying to send a message after being left off the All-Star team. "I'm going to continue what I've been doing and maybe next year I'll get another shot at it."

"They had a spectacular performance from Michael Finley," said Cavaliers coach Mike Fratello. "We had nobody to guard him tonight. They rode his brilliant effort to a win."

Shawn Kemp had 22 points, 12 rebounds and a season-high six assists for the Cavaliers, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Cleveland went more than seven minutes without a basket, beginning late in the fourth quarter and carrying into the final minute of overtime.

With the game tied 73-73 with 3:15 left in regulation, Wesley Person sank a pair of free throws to give Cleveland a two-point lead. After a couple of misses, A.C. Green grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with 1:48 to go. After Green made both free throws, each team had a chance to win in regulation, but Person and Finley exchanged misses in the final six seconds.

Cleveland raced to an 11-3 lead behind five points from Kemp, but Dallas responded with a 9-2 burst. Kemp had 14 points and five rebounds as the Cavaliers led 26-23 after 12 minutes.

Neither team was able to open more than a five-point lead in the second quarter as Cleveland took a 41-39 halftime lead. The Cavaliers were just 18-of-46 from the field, including 1-for-7 from three-point range. Dallas was even worse, making 14-of-41 attempts, including 2-of-7 from beyond the arc.

The game was tied at 59-59 in the final minute of the third quarter when Cleveland went on a 10-2 run, capped by Anderson's 17-foot jump shot with 7:38 left. Dallas ran off eight straight points to knot the contest at 69-69 with 5:47 remaining.

Dallas is 1-3 in overtime while Cleveland fell to 0-3. The Cavaliers have dropped six straight overtime games while Dallas snapped a six-game extra-session slide.
