GAME RECAP

One game after stopping their single-season record 23-game losing streak, the Denver Nuggets were routed 120-87 by the New Jersey Nets, who received a balanced attack led by 18 points apiece from Kerry Kittles and Sam Cassell.

The Nets, who had six players in double figures, outscored the Nuggets by 71 points in sweeping the two-game series for the second time in the past three seasons. Sherman Douglas added 16 points for New Jersey, which avoided matching a season-high three-game losing streak as it began a five-game road trip.

"We came in and our whole idea was to make the game hard for Denver defensively," said New Jersey coach John Calipari. "I told our team it would be a battle defensively. To show you how much we respected them, we came in two days early and had a hard practice so we would be winded at practice and not in the game."

Rookie Danny Fortson and Dean Garrett each scored 15 points for the Nuggets, who defeated the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday but have lost 10 straight home games. Denver's 23-game slide matched the 1995-96 Vancouver Grizzlies for the longest losing streak in one season.

"This game worried me because they put pressure on us up there and it bothered us," said Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "We struggled to find the right combination. Defensively we were atrocious. They are a good team. Well coached, athletic, with a lot of guys who can score."

Denver has lost two of its last three home meetings with New Jersey after a 12-game winning streak over the Nets at McNichols Arena.

The Nets shot 58 percent (45-for-78) from the field, including 10-for-15 from three-point range. Kittles connected on 6-of-7 shots, including 5-for-6 from behind the arc, and Cassell made 9-of-12. The Nuggets shot 37.5 percent (33-for-88) from the floor. Rookie Keith Van Horn had 13 points and five rebounds and played a team-high 29 minutes for the Nets.

"The altitude didn't affect me," Van Horn said. "I've played in it for four years. Our starters had to come in and do a good job because we have a big game tomorrow. My take is you get drafted to help a team win and what you do should help them win."

Cassell had eight points and the Nets shot 67 percent (14-for-21) in the first period to take a 35-17 lead. New Jersey's lead did not fall below 15 points in the second quarter and grew as big as 30 points when Douglas hit a three-pointer to cap an 11-2 surge for a 64-34 bulge with 68 seconds left in the first half.

New Jersey took its biggest lead of the game when Cassell's layup made it 82-44 with 6:39 to go in the third. The Nuggets outscored the Nets, 28-27, in the final period but never cut the deficit under 29 points.
