GAME RECAP

Tom Gugliotta had 26 points and nine assists and Stephon Marbury added 21 and eight as the Minnesota Timberwolves won their franchise-record fifth consecutive home game, a 113-96 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, who have lost five in a row.

Snubbed for the Western Conference All-Star team earlier in the day, Gugliotta connected on 11-of-17 shots for the Timberwolves, who had lost their last six home meetings with the Hawks.

"I did the best I could on the court and put myself in a good position," Gugliotta said about not being named to the All-Star team. "After that, it's out of my hands. I'm not that upset about it. Our team has a lot to look forward to."

"They're disappointed and the whole organization is disappointed," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders about Gugliotta and Marbury not being selected. "Their mission has to be to go out and prove to everybody that they are worthy of it. You gain respect by having team success, which leads individual success."

Kevin Garnett tallied 15 points and Cherokee Parks grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots for Minnesota, which had its franchise-record seven-game winning streak stopped in a 113-107 overtime loss at Toronto on Saturday.

Alan Henderson scored a career-high 27 points and Mookie Blaylock added 19 and nine assists for the Hawks, who lost at Minnesota for the first time since April 11th, 1991 and dropped to 13-4 all-time against the Wolves. Eldridge Recasner added 17 points.

"We've been flat the last four or five games," Henderson said. "We didn't come out with the type of enthusiasm we needed. In the third quarter we got it down around six points and then we missed a shot and then it just seemed to get out of hand. I don't know why we don't have the kind of intensity we need on the defensive end, but we've got to figure that out."

Henderson converted a three-point play to pull the Hawks within 39-37 with 7:02 remaining the second period. Gugliotta answered with an 18-footer 13 seconds later and Marbury finished a fast break with a driving layup for a 43-37 lead with 6:31 left in the first half.

"We played with a lot of intensity tonight," Marbury said. "We moved the ball and got a lot of easy shots. When you get easy baskets, it makes the game so much easier. The bench was great again for us. Terry Porter and Sam Mitchell have been playing hard and giving us a lift."

The Hawks hung close until Marbury capped a 16-9 run with a three-point play for a 61-50 cushion 35 seconds before halftime. Also somewhat of an All-Star snub, Marbury scored eight points during the surge.

Blaylock capped a 10-3 spurt with a layup to cut the deficit to 64-60 with 8:40 remaining in the third period. Gugliotta began and ended an 11-0 burst that made it 75-60 with 5:18 to go in the period.

Minnesota maintained a double-digit lead throughout and took its biggest margin of the game at 110-90 when Garnett completed a three-point play with two minutes remaining.

Minnesota led almost the whole way, taking the lead for good at 12-11 when Marbury made a driving layup with 4:20 left in the opening quarter. The Wolves led 28-20 after one period, shooting 59 percent (13-for-22).
