GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker sank a fadeaway jumper from left wing at the buzzer, lifting the Boston Celtics to a 104-102 victory over the Washington Wizards.

After Calbert Cheaney sank a pair of free throws to tie it, 102-102, with 18.5 seconds left, rookie Chauncey Billups took the inbounds pass at the top of the arc. Billups dribbled until passing to Walker with about three seconds to go. Walker dribbled a few times before falling away and releasing his shot over the outstretched hand of Chris Webber.

"It's harder when you're the one checking him but if we had to defend that play 10 more times, I'm confident that he would miss the majority of the shots," said Webber. "But it doesn't matter about nine out of 10, or 10 out of 10, it just matters about the one he took. You just have to give Antoine credit for that, it was a great shot."

"The play was for a layup, but they switched and that meant I had to stray out," Walker said. "Chauncey was looking for the layup also and they took it away, so I stepped out, took the pass, and I knew I had to get the shot off. And I knew Webber could block shots, so I had to just shoot and fade. It felt good leaving my hands. I knew I could make it, it was just a matter of getting the shot off in time."

Rookie Ron Mercer scored 22 points and Walker added 18 and seven rebounds for the Celtics, who have taken two of three meetings from the Wizards this season after losing all four matchups last season. Walker scored a career-high 49 points in a 110-108 loss at Washington on January 7th.

"Tonight's game took a lot of teammwork and Antoine stepped up and made the big shot at the end," Mercer said. "Down the stretch we made the shots we needed to make. I think we're trying to jell together more and more. I think we're picking up everything pretty well so far and I think in the second half of the season it's going to be a lot better."

Tracy Murray came off the bench to score 22 points and Juwan Howard added 20, a season-high 13 rebounds and five assists for the Wizards, who have lost six of their last nine games.

"If he takes that again 10 more times he's not going to make it at all," said Murray about Walker's shot. "That was a tough shot. It started at 15 (feet) and it ended up at 18 or 20 falling off one leg. That was a tough shot, it was a H-O-R-S-E shot. How many times is he going to make that shot alone? Not to mention having a hand in his face like he did."

Murray capped a 7-2 surge with a pair of free throws, tying it at 98-98 with 2:13 remaining. Mercer answered with a jumper to give the Celtics a 100-98 edge with 1:51 to go.

Webber, who had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, hit a running layup as the Wizards tied it at 100-100 with 1:26 remaining. Webber had a chance to give Washington the lead but missed a free throw after he was fouled by Billups.

Mercer's running jumper in the lane gave Boston a 102-100 edge with 37 seconds to play before the Wizards tied it a final time on Cheaney's free throws. Cheaney had 16 points and eight rebounds and Rod Strickland recorded 14 and 10 assists.

Washington had its biggest lead of the game at 23-11 when Murray's jumper capped a 10-0 burst with 4:42 left in the opening period. Howard scored eight points as the Wizards held a 31-22 advantage at the end of the first.

The Wizards maintained the lead throughout the second period and matched its biggest when Murray's layup made it 58-46, 67 seconds before halftime.

Mercer began and ended a 10-0 run that put Boston ahead for the first time, 67-66, when he converted two free throws with 6:32 left in the third. Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff was ejected by referee Sean Corbin with 3:31 remaining in the third for arguing a foul on Cheaney.

"I actually think Bernie getting thrown out actually fired the team up," Webber said. "Another reason this loss hurts is because coach put himself on the line and we didn't get the game won. I didn't think that (ejection) was bad for us. I think if anything it fired us up."

The game was tied at 81-81 after three quarters and the Celtics built a lead as big as five points on three different occasions, with the final one coming when Mercer's jumper made it 96-91 with 4:02 to go.
