GAME RECAP

Grant Hill had 29 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and sank four free throws in the final 41 seconds as the Detroit Pistons handed the Orlando Magic their seventh straight loss, 91-86.

Detroit made just 20-of-32 free throws overall, but hit its last eight in the final 90 seconds to secure the victory. Hill, who has led the team in points, rebounds and assists eight times this season, had made just 7-of-13 foul shots before hitting his final four.

"I couldn't hit one to save my life, but luckily I was able to hit a couple down the stretch," Hill said. "Myself and the team together, we've got to make those. Those are the second-easiest shots in the game next to layups."

Jerry Stackhouse contributed 18 points for PQed a brief two-game losing streak and avenged an 89-84 loss to Orlando and former coach Chuck Daly on November 7th.

"In close games like this, you have to make free throws," said Daly, whose Magic made just 12-of-21 foul shots.

Nick Anderson scored a season-high 22 points but was unable to prevent the Magic from recording their longest losing streak since also losing seven in a row from February 28th-March 10th, 1992. They have also dropped six straight road games and have failed to score 100 points in 21 consecutive contests.

Orlando, already playing without All-Star guard Penny Hardaway, lost starting center Rony Seikaly with 10:42 left in the third quarter when he jumped for a rebound and landed on teammate Bo Outlaw's foot. Seikaly suffered a twisted right ankle but X-rays were negative.

The Magic trailed 70-59 lead into the fourth quarter but Mark Price scored seven of his 10 points in a 17-6 run that tied the game. Price's layup with 2:25 to play knotted the score at 80-80, but Joe Dumars answered with a three-pointer to put the Pistons ahead to stay.

Outlaw came back with a follow slam to pull the Magic within one, but Jerome Williams sank two free throws and Hill added a pair with 41 seconds left to build the lead to 87-82. Horace Grant, who scored 16 points despite suffering a dislocated finger on Friday, responded with a layup less than two seconds later.

The Magic actually had a great opportunity to tie the game after Hill was whistled for an offensive foul with 18 seconds left. Price had a wide-open three-pointer after the defender fell down, but the shot was off the mark and Hill grabbed the rebound.

"I didn't expect to have that much time to look at the basket. It looked good when it left, it just didn't get there," Price said. "I had it in my mind I was going to penetrate. I was looking to him (the defender) to see where he was. It's a shot I need to make."

"I don't know how often Mark Price will ever miss that shot, but we desperately needed to win this game," Pistons coach Doug Collins said.

Hill sank two foul shots with seven seconds remaining and, after Orlando's Darrell Armstrong hit a quick driving layup, Dumars sealed the win with a pair from the foul line.

"Joe hit a critical three for us, which he's done his entire career," Collins said. "I was really happy when Grant stepped up there and hit those free throws when we really needed them. Then we got a couple of key stops, we were lucky."

Detroit trailed 26-20 after one period but finished the first half with a 25-11 burst. Lindsey Hunter scored seven of his 11 points in that run, which gave the Pistons a 47-42 lead.

"We get a little lax on defense when we get a lead and allow teams to get back in it," Hunter said. "As you know, offense will come and go, but the one thing we can be consistent with is our defense. We have to start doing that and stay focused for 48 minutes."

The Pistons were without starting forward-center Brian Williams for the second straight game. The team's second-leading scorer and top rebounder is sidelined with tendinitis in his left knee.
