GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 31 points and Will Perdue pulled down 16 rebounds, leading the San Antonio Spurs to their 16th straight home win, a 109-86 rout of the struggling Los Angeles Clippers.

Rookie Tim Duncan collected 23 points and 11 rebounds and Avery Johnson added 14 points and 11 assists for the Spurs, who have won four of their last five games and 14 of 17.

Chuck Person scored 15 points off the bench, going 5-for-7 from three-point range, for San Antonio, which has not lost at home since November 15th against Minnesota.

"We had real good concentration tonight," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "I was worried we might not be able to keep our concentration, but we kept it up, which was good to see. Every game is loseable if you don't go in and compete. That's something you have to fight against all the time."

Rookie Maurice Taylor contributed 18 points off the bench and Eric Piatkowski 17 for Los Angeles, which has dropped six straight games and 10 of 11 overall. The Clippers also have lost four straight on the road, where they are 4-22.

"A six-game losing streak is not monumental in the NBA," Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch said. "There have been a few longer streaks, so let's not get into that. We played a very good team tonight and had no answers. You want to talk about streaks, what about all the shots we missed in a row?"

San Antonio, which had lost five the last six meetings with the Clippers, controlled the boards by a 53-35 margin, as all 12 players grabbed at least one rebound. Robinson had contributed nine rebounds and Carl Herrera four off the bench.

"The fans have been great, making this a great atmosphere to play in," Robinson said of his team's success at the Alamodome. "I tried to use my quickness tonight to get to the rim. The Clippers have some big bodies, but they had to play against three big guys on our team.

"Our guys work hard every day and take a professional approach to the game and that gives us confidence."

Lorenzen Wright was the Clippers' leader off the boards with nine.

The Spurs also outshot Los Angeles from the field, 51 percent (41-for-80) to 38 percent (33-for-86).

Piatkowski and Robinson each scored 11 points in the first quarter, as the Spurs took a 27-26 lead. A layup by Piatkowski with 10:11 left in the second quarter gave Los Angeles a 28-27 lead, but the Spurs answered with a 6-0 spurt to take the lead for good. Duncan, who scored 10 points in the second quarter, had all six points, capping off the burst with a six-footer to make it 33-28 with 8:29 left in the first half.

San Antonio extended its lead with a 9-0 run, capped by Robinson's dunk to open a 54-38 lead with 1:41 to go before halftime.

The Spurs' lead grew to as many as 34 points twice in the fourth quarter, the last time at 109-75 on a Malik Rose dunk with 3:18 remaining.

The teams will meet again on Friday night in Los Angeles.

"We're going to have to do a lot of things differently," Piatkowski said. "We had absolutely no rotation on defense and that gave them open shots. Playing defense like that, you're not going to beat anybody in this league."
