GAME RECAP

Rookie Keith Van Horn scored 30 points and Kerry Kittles added 24 as the New Jersey Nets took control in the first half and went on to a 106-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kittles had 16 points and Van Horn had 11 as the Nets built a 57-41 halftime lead. Kittles scored seven points during a prolonged 18-6 second-quarter run that gave New Jersey a 50-33 bulge with 3:20 remaining.

"It (the win) meant a lot to me because the whole team played a solid game," Van Horn said. "It was the first time in awhile that everyone played well."

Van Horn hit 10-of-19 shots and all seven of his free throw attempts for New Jersey, which played the last 21 1/2 minutes without All-Star center Jayson Williams, who was ejected after picking up his second technical foul.

"I felt the need to step it up (after Williams' ejection)," said Van Horn. "Jayson has been our star and the best player on our team. Anytime you lose the best player on your team, everyone else has to step up."

Kittles was 5-of-5 from the line as the Nets sank 17-of-22 free throws and made 41-of-94 (44 percent) of their field goal attempts.

"We basically played a terrible game, there's really not whole lot you can say about it other than that," said Lakers coach Del Harris. We didn't handle the ball well and we didn't shoot well. They (New Jersey) came and played like a young team that's trying to beat an All-Star team."

Shaquille O'Neal collected 27 points, 19 rebounds and six blocks and Kobe Bryant added 26 points off the bench for the Lakers, who fell two games behind first-place Seattle in the Pacific Division.

"I'm going to have to start embarassing some of my teammates," stated O'Neal. "I don't want to do that but I'm going to have to. If this team doesn't win, Del will probably get the blame and so will I. I don't buy into that (crap) about it being the coaches fault."

The Lakers were booed for their poor effort on several occasions by the crowd of 15,643. O'Neal affirmed that he was affected by the fans' reaction to the loss.

"Yeah, I wouldn't want you to come to my mansion and boo my paintings," he said.

Sam Cassell contributed 13 points and 11 assists for the Nets, who at 25-19 are 13 games ahead of last season's pace, when they finished 26-56.

Bryant, who will be starting for the Western Conference in the February 8th All-Star Game, hit a jumper with 3:45 left in the first quarter to give the Lakers their last lead, 16-14.

But Kendal Gill nailed a 10-footer for the tie, Van Horn scored four points on a pair of free throws and a 17-foot jumper and Lucious Harris converted a drive to the basket to give New Jersey a six-point edge.

Gill had 14 points and eight rebounds and Harris led the Nets' bench with eight points. Williams had just eight and four rebounds in 14 minutes but Michael Cage picked up the slack on the glass, grabbing 12 boards to lead New Jersey to a 49-47 rebounding edge.

New Jersey continued to pour it on in the second half. After O'Neal connected on a short jumper to open the third quarter, Kittles drained consecutive three-pointers before feeding Williams for a dunk as the Nets assumed a 63-43 advantage.

The Lakers got as close as 91-78 early in the fourth quarter on two free throws by Elden Campbell before Van Horn rattled off five straight points for New Jersey, which has won four of its last five on the road.

"What you saw tonight was probably one of our better performances; defensively, offensively, moving the ball and playing with poise," said Nets coach John Calipari. "We did a couple of things to let it get close, but it was never really out of hand. It was a great effort."

Eddie Jones netted 17 points but Nick Van Exel was held to just two on 1-of-9 shooting for the Lakers, who made 45 percent (39-of-86) of their field goals.

Los Angeles has lost two in a row on the heels of a four-game winning streak.
