GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 29 points and Scottie Pippen added 18, including a pair of key three-pointers, as the Chicago Bulls pulled away for their fourth straight road win, 100-87 over the Portland Trail Blazers.

After the Trail Blazers opened a 41-22 lead 2:30 into the second quarter, the Bulls began to chip away. Chicago, which has won nine of its last 11 games and evened its road record at 11-11, finally took a 57-55 lead with just over nine minutes left in the third quarter.

The Bulls, who never trailed the rest of the way, are 2-0 on their six-game West Coast trip and defeated Portland for the sixth straight time.

"This is a team we hadn't seen so we just had to maintain our poise and they gave us a opportunity to get back in the game," Jordan said. "I never doubted we couldn't come back. It's too long a game to worry about a 19-point lead. We've been down before and we didn't panic at all."

"I wasn't worried while we were down 19," said Pippen. "This team knows how to stay in a basketball game. The defense helped us all get started on the offensive end. It really helped me get in the flow, especially after halftime."

Isaiah Rider had 29 points and Rasheed Wallace added a season-high 28 for Portland, which fell to 12-10 at home. Kenny Anderson added 11 points and 10 assists for the Trail Blazers, who scored 35 points in the first quarter but just 34 in the second half.

"I can't fault our effort tonight, but when we got behind we tended to rush our shots," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "All in all, I thought we did a pretty good job on Michael. But as he tends to do, he made clutch shots at the end. He's still playing at such a high level. He certainly hasn't come down from the clouds yet."

After Portland took a 41-22 lead, the Bulls answered with a 15-1 run. But the Trail Blazers scored six straight to open a 48-37 lead. Chicago didn't fold and responded by closing the half with a 14-5 spurt.

Rider opened the second half with a basket but Ron Harper and Luc Longley answered for Chicago. Jordan then hit a 15-footer to give Chicago a 57-55 lead it would not relinquish. Portland would draw within a point on three occassions late in the third quarter but in each instance Chicago would answer.

The Trail Blazers were within 72-71 with 2:01 left following a free throw by Rider, but Dennis Rodman -- who had 20 rebounds -- had a tip-in and Pippen followed with a three-pointer. Portland never got closer than four the rest of the way.

Arvydas Sabonis' basket with 8:15 left in regulation got the Trail Blazers within 83-79 but Pippen hit another three-pointer and Rodman sank a layup to push the lead to nine.

Chicago was 21-of-23 from the free throw line and held a 47-38 advantage on the boards.

"We put together three quarters of good defensive basketball after their tremendous start," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "Portland came out hot and heavy and our defense played strong after that opening quarter. Dennis came back and collared the boards and Michael found his rhythm."
