GAME RECAP

Rick Fox scored six of his 25 points during a 15-0 burst that opened the third quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers avenged their worst loss of the season with a 112-87 rout of the Chicago Bulls.

All-Star center Shaquille O'Neal scored 24 points and All-Star guards Eddie Jones and Kobe Bryant added 20 apiece for the shorthanded Lakers, who outscored the Bulls 34-11 in the third quarter and led by as many as 28 points.

"It's real unusual for a team to go from start to finish against one of the top teams in the league -- in this case probably the top team in the league -- and withstand throughout the game," Lakers coach Del Harris said. "We've had some good games but there's never played a better game than that. To tell you the truth, I don't know how many better games we've played in my four years here."

"It was a layup line out there," Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. "It was embarrassing to us as a basketball club. Guys couldn't get back on defense. ... We didn't send them any statement. They sent all the statements today. their third quarter was dynamic. It looked like our guys were tired."

Fox was coming off a season-high 30 points against Minnesota on Friday. He shot 10-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, as his outburst made up for the absence of injured All-Star guard Nick Van Exel, who was sidelined with a strained left hip flexor, and forward Robert Horry, who was out with an abdominal strain.

"Fox has been playing well," O'Neal said. "Me and him talked. I just said, 'You're just thinking too much. Just go out and play. Mix it up.'"

In the nationally televised matchup, the team of the present was no match for the team of the future. Two-time defending champion Chicago was run ragged, suffering its second-worst loss of the season. Meanwhile, the Lakers atoned for a 104-83 beating by the Bulls in Chicago on December 17th.

"The game was very important to us," O'Neal said. "We wanted to beat a great team at home. It's easy to get up for the greatest player in the world. Michael Jordan is the greatest player in the world. We just did what we're supposed to do -- win at home."

"It was sweet, so sweet," Bryant said. "They embarrassed us up in Chicago and we wanted to come back and hand it back to them. It was a big game. Everybody was on the same page, because if your head is not there, they'll kick your butt."

Michael Jordan scored 31 points but shot just 11-of-26 from the field for Chicago, which fell to 3-1 on its six-game road trip and 12-12 away from home overall. Last season, the Bulls were 30-11 on the road.

"It seemed like we didn't come out with the same intensity that we did in the beginning of the game," Jordan said. "We just didn't focus on the game and I guess against a team that is looking for an identity, looking for an upper hand, you have to be mentally prepared to go out and play your game."

Los Angeles led 57-53 at halftime and wasted no time jumping on Chicago in the third quarter. Layups by Jones, O'Neal and Derek Fisher, who started for Van Exel, extended the lead to 10 points before Fox took over.

He made a three-pointer with 10:22 to go, then added a steal and a three-point play. A three-pointer by Jones capped the run and gave the Lakers a 72-53 lead with 9:39 left in the period.

"We started to run the ball a little bit more," Bryant said. "We started to get out on the break. We rebounded the ball pretty well and got a nice lead."

Jones scored 10 points in the quarter, which ended with the Lakers holding a 91-64 lead. Los Angeles shot a blistering 64 percent (14-of-22) while holding Chicago to just 26 percent (5-of-19).

"The third quarter, mentally we were not there," Jordan said. "We have not been able to rise to the occasion, and that's a bad sign."

The Lakers opened their largest lead on a three-pointer by Fox with 10:52 remaining. Both teams emptied their benches and the Bulls got no closer than 20 points thereafter.

Los Angeles shot 52 percent (42-of-81) from the field and got big boosts from Fisher and Corie Blount, who were pressed into the starting lineup. Fisher had eight points, seven assists and a career-high seven rebounds. Blount collected seven points, 13 rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

"I hope this says we're a team to be reckoned with," Bryant said. "Maybe they'll leave today's game saying, 'Hey, you were missing Nick and Robert but you still handed it to us."

Scott Burrell scored a season-high 15 points and Scottie Pippen added 13 for the Bulls, who shot just 38 percent (33-of-86) and held a 48-46 rebounding edge. Dennis Rodman grabbed 15 boards.

"It was one of 82 nights and this is one of the 82 that we lost," Rodman said. "It's no big deal. It's not how you start, it's how you finish the season. Like I said, we'll be there in June. it's just a question of who will be there for us."

Jordan scored 12 points in the first quarter, but Fox tallied nine and the Lakers led 26-23 after 12 minutes. They opened the advantage to 33-25 on a fast-break layup by Fox with 10:18 left in the second quarter. But Jordan scored 10 more points in the period, allowing Chicago to pull within four at halftime.
