GAME RECAP

Vin Baker scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Detlef Schrempf added 20 and 13 rebounds as the Seattle SuperSonics raced to an early lead and hung on to defeat the New Jersey Nets, 97-87.

Gary Payton added 14 points and tied a season-high with 14 assists as Seattle won its ninth straight home game against New Jersey. The SuperSonics have the NBA's best record at 36-10 and are 19-2 at home.

Rookie Keith Van Horn and Jayson Williams scored 17 points each to lead five players in double figures for New Jersey, which was looking to surpass last season's win total but fell to 3-2 on their six-game road swing.

New Jersey was just 3-of-17 from three-point range and shot 39 percent (32-of-82) overall. Seattle was 36-of-69 from the field (52 percent), including 9-of-20 from three-point range.

"I think we are spoiled by our three-point shooting," said Seattle coach George Karl. "We were kind of laughing that we were 9-for-20 and we didn't think we shot it that well. We rely upon it, we believe in it and I don't think that is going to change."

"I told the team at the half we were playing for the division and we can't give up," said Nets coach John Calipari. "We didn't shoot well and that hurt us in the first half. We had bad rotations all during the game and they took advantage all game."

New Jersey trailed 72-60 after three quarters but started the fourth quarter with a 15-5 burst. Kerry Kittles had a pair of three-pointers during the spurt, which left the Nets down by a bucket with 6:41 to play.

But Sam Perkins buried a three-pointer with 6:23 to go to put Seattle ahead by five. Van Horn followed with a three-point play, but Dale Ellis answered with a three-pointer for the Sonics.

Van Horn hit a 20-footer with 3:51 left to get the Nets within 83-80. But again Seattle answered on Baker's dunk with 3:14 remaining. Baker sank a free throw to push the lead to 86-80 but Williams had a dunk for New Jersey.

Baker drew a foul on Van Horn and hit one of two free throws with 94 seconds remaining and Schrempf followed with a basket to push the lead to seven.

Seattle, which never trailed, used a 13-6 burst to open a 20-10 advantage. Schrempf had 10 of the Sonics' first 20 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

"They just throw the ball up and they are all going at it, so it was important for us to win the boards tonight," said Schrempf. "We knew they were going to come in and take all kinds of wild shots. That is their game, we did a good job of rebounding. That allowed us to run hard and get some easy baskets."

Van Horn made just one of his first six shots before finishing 6-of-13. The Nets' starting backcourt of Kittle and Sam Cassell combined to shoot 7-of-24 from the field. Williams had nine rebounds -- his fourth straight game in single digits -- after grabbing 24 in the first meeting between the teams.

"We shot poorly in the first half and we didn't defend as well as we did in the second half," said Van Horn. "If we had done one or the other it would have been a ballgame."

Ellis finished with 16 points off the bench.
