GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 11 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 18 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs handed the Sacramento Kings their first loss in nine home games, 103-97.

Mitch Richmond scored 27 of his 31 points in the second half and single-handedly kept the Kings close in the final period. His three-pointer knotted the score, 90-90, with 2:53 to play, but the Spurs reeled off the next nine points to secure the win.

"This was a great game tonight, we made some shots and made some stops at the right time of the game," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I'm just thrilled that we came out of here with a victory. It's tough to do here."

Chuck Person scored 19 points and sparked that spurt with one of his five three-pointers before rookie Tim Duncan sank a free throw and Robinson converted a three-point play. Avery Johnson, who had 14 points and 12 assists, made a pair of foul shots to cap the run, building a 99-90 lead with 50 seconds remaining.

The Kings got no closer than the final score thereafter despite Richmond scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter.

"In the fourth quarter, we just died," Richmond said. "Chuck Person broke our back a couple of times, hitting some big threes. But we still fought back and tied it up late. Just down the stretch, two field goals out of 18 attempts are not going to get the job done."

Duncan struggled with foul trouble throughout but still finished with 14 points and 12 boards for the Spurs, who have won four straight games and 22 of 26.

"We didn't play really well, but we persevered and kept going at it," Duncan said. "They played a good game throughout. Mitch Richmond played really great in the second half."

Corliss Williamson fouled out with 21 points and Billy Owens added 18 and 11 rebounds for Sacramento, which had not lost at home since a 111-95 defeat to Seattle on December 26th.

"This was a tough game to lose. We really fought hard," Williamson said. "I think we all played extremely aggressive. I think we had started to do some things that were going to help us win, but unfortuantely for us, somethings didn't go our way."

After Richmond's free throw gave Sacramento an 86-85 lead, Robinson hit two foul shots and Person buried a three-pointer and the Kings never led again. Richmond came back with a free throw and his three-pointer to tie the game before Person's three started the decisive run.

"I just tried to do whatever it took tonight to win. The shot was there all night," Person said. "I told Pop (Popovich) that I had the hand, so he told me to shoot. I didn't hesitate."

Robinson has been the top scorer in six straight games for the Spurs, who maintained a 1 1/2-game lead over the Utah Jazz in the Midwest Division.

Trailing 53-43 early in the third quarter, the Kings used a 16-2 burst to grab the lead. Richmond scored 10 points on that spurt and his two free throws gave Sacramento a 59-55 edge with 6:25 left. The Spurs trimmed the deficit to 69-67 by the end of the period.

"It would have been a good game for us to win," added Richmond, who has led the Kings in scoring in 10 straight games. "We came back and took the lead in the third and the momentum was with us."

Since forward Sean Elliott went down with a knee injury, center Will Perdue has been placed into the starting lineup along with fellow seven-footers Duncan and Robinson. The move apparently has paid off, because Perdue had another strong game. He finished with 10 points and 14 boards as San Antonio posted a season high for rebounds and held a 56-43 edge on the glass.

"They have a very good team, they are big," Kings coach Eddie Jordan said. "Their rebounding really hurt us, 21 offensive rebounds. We held this team to 43 percent shooting, so our defense really played well enough for us to win."
