GAME RECAP

Scott Burrell connected on 5-of-7 three-pointers and scored a season-high 24 points off the bench -- all in the fourth quarter -- and Scottie Pippen added 19, leading the Chicago Bulls to a 111-72 rout of the Denver Nuggets.

The 39-point defeat was the Nuggets' worst home loss since joining the NBA in 1976-77. Denver's most lopsided home defeat had been 38 points, 130-92 to Indiana on December 30th, 1990. This game also marked the Bulls' biggest win over Denver, surpassing the 33-point margin set on November 14th, 1992 at Chicago Stadium.

"I was hoping to get a couple of good spurts so we could get our fans into it, but they prevented us from doing that," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "It was neat to see the place filled up but it was a Bulls' crowd. They play such good defense, they make it very tough to get any good looks. To win a championship you have to be very sound defensively, and Chicago is definitely that."

Coming off a 112-87 loss to the Lakers on Sunday, the Bulls improved 3-1 on their five-game road trip leading up to the All-Star break. They play at Utah on Wednesday in an NBA Finals rematch.

After playing just 11 minutes and scoring only six points in the first two games of the trip, Burrell has heated up in the last two. He scored 15 points in Sunday's loss at Los Angeles before making 8-of-13 shots against Denver and finishing two points shy of his career high.

"I was trying to get some assists, but they kept kicking it back to me," Burrell said. "I sure hope the old Scott Burrell is back. I didn't think it would be a big scoring day for me. I never had that many opportunities to score in a game before."

Michael Jordan and Ron Harper chipped in with 15 points apiece for Chicago, which won for the eighth time in 10 games and improved to 13-12 on the road. Dennis Rodman also pulled down 16 rebounds for Chicago, which defeated Denver for the fourth straight time.

"Playing Denver is like playing a high school team," Rodman said. "They should've kept the players they had, but owners want to be rich. ... I didn't want to play this game, but we have to. The Nuggets will probably be competitive on the day I die. They're very close to being the worst NBA team I've seen. I can't say anything good about the Nuggets."

Johnny Newman scored 19 points off the bench and LaPhonso Ellis had 13 for the Nuggets, who never led and lost for the 19th time in 22 games at McNichols Arena. The Nuggets snapped their franchise-record 11-game home losing streak on Saturday with a win over Dallas.

Chicago outshot Denver from the field 50 percent (42-for-84) to 35 percent (28-for-79) and dominated the boards, owning a 55-33 advantage. The 22-rebound deficit was Denver's largest of the season.

"It's too bad that basketball has lost its competitive edge here," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "We played terrible basketball in the first half but our fourth quarter was great. Our size and domination was the difference. We're probably good enough to win 60 games but we will struggle to do it."

After Anthony Goldwire's 21-footer pulled Denver within 28-26 with 7:31 left in the first half, Chicago went on a 19-7 run tyo close the second quarter. Pippen had six points during the spurt, finishing it off with a layup in the final second to make it 47-33 at the break.

Denver reduced Chicago's lead to nine points with 8:29 left in the third quarter on a three-pointer by Newman. That was the last time the Bulls' lead was reduced to single digits as they closed the period with a 73-56 lead, paced by Pippen's 10 points.

The Bulls increased their cushion to as many as 40 points in the fourth quarter, going ahead, 109-69, on Burrell's fifth three-pointer of the period with 50 seconds remaining. Chicago outscored Denver 38-16 in the final quarter.
