GAME RECAP

Alonzo Mourning had 22 points and a season-high 17 rebounds and Jamal Mashburn added 16 points to lead the Miami Heat to a 90-83 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Mourning made 10-of-12 shots from the field as the Heat won their fourth straight home meeting with Atlanta. Tim Hardaway contributed 11 points and 13 assists for Miami, which had six players in double figures and avoided matching a season-high three-game losing streak.

"Our guys were committed to winning the game, we only turned it over 12 times," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "It was a good bounce back win. We sometimes focus too much on what we do wrong, but we're still leading the Atlantic Conference. This is the first blip on the radar screen in the past two years. We've got to look at catching Chicago."

Dan Majerle and Voshon Lenard each tallied 13 points for the Heat, who moved 2 1/2 games ahead of New York and New Jersey for the Atlantic Division lead. Miami played without forward P.J. Brown, who served his one-game suspension for leaving the bench area during a fight in Sunday's 89-83 loss to the New York Knicks.

"We lost yesterday and we were lucky to get back on the court today," Mashburn said. "I'd much rather play a game than go through one of coach Riley's practices."

Mookie Blaylock scored 22 points and Steve Smith added 17 for the Hawks, who had won their last two games. Atlanta center Dikembe Mutumbo left with 3:59 remaining when he fell hard to the floor after getting fouled by Lenard. The X-rays were negative on Mutombo, who had 14 points and 15 rebounds. He made 6-of-7 shots from the field, but the rest of the Hawks shot just 36 percent (23-for-64).

"I'll wait to see how it is when I wake up," Mutombo said. "I was just going for the dunk. I don't know what he was trying to do."

"We didn't shoot the ball well," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkins. "This game was more our errors than anything."

Lenard had eight points in a 16-2 run that bridged the second and third periods. His three-pointer capped it for a 62-47 advantage with 9:45 left in the third. The Hawks cut the lead to 80-73 when Alan Henderson made a jumper with 8:51 to go in the fourth, but did not have another field goal until he hit another basket for the final margin with 35 seconds left.

Smith had 12 points to lead the Hawks to a 30-28 lead at the end of the first quarter. Majerle had eight points in a 14-2 burst that bridged the first two periods, capping it with a three-pointer for a 33-30 lead with 10:59 left in the second. Lenard made a jumper to give the Heat the lead for good, 41-40, with 4:56 left in the second.

The Hawks have lost four of their last five games on the road.
