GAME RECAP

Reserve James Robinson scored 11 of his season-high 25 points in the final quarter and coach Bill Fitch posted a milestone victory as the Los Angeles Clippers surprised the Utah Jazz, 111-102, at Anaheim, snapping an eight-game losing streak.

Fitch, who on January 3rd became the first coach in NBA history to coach 2,000 games, tied the legendary Red Auerbach for second place on the all-time wins list with 938. Both trail Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens, who has 1,090 victories.

"We bent but didn't break. When we really needed buckets, we got them," said Fitch. "We made a couple of tough shots during some tough possessions. I thought we played as good as we could in the fourth quarter."

The Clippers held a double-digit lead for most of the third quarter but Utah climbed within four points early in the fourth period. Lorenzen Wright, who had 17 points and 15 rebounds, made a layup before Robinson pumped in six straight points to end the threat.

"Robinson was playing a regular role tonight," said Fitch. "He wasn't just a player coming off the bench. I thought Pike (Eric Piatkowski) did a good job too."

"We really needed this win," said Robinson. "It boosted our confidence level."

Los Angeles was on target from long range, hitting 12-of-23 from behind the arc (52 percent). Robinson was 5-of-9 from three-point range and Eric Piatkowski 4-of-5. Piatkowski finished with 15 points as the Clippers shot 51 percent (42-of-82) overall.

Robinson did his scoring early as well, collecting 11 in the second quarter as the Clippers shot 58 percent to grab a 55-40 lead at halftime.

Rodney Rogers, locked in a grueling physical battle with All-Star Karl Malone, managed 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting with nine boards for Los Angeles, which held a 43-26 rebounding edge.

"You just can't let him get position where he wants to get it," explained Rogers. "That's the physical part of it. You could say it was a physical game. Seems like a lot of them are, especially down in the paint."

"I guess we just bring out the best in them," said Malone. "They have the talent and they play us hard every time."

Malone had 23 points and seven rebounds and John Stockton contributed 22 points and 10 assists for Utah, which fell 2 1/2 games behind first-place San Antonio in the Midwest Division.

"They kicked us all over the building on the boards," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan. "We were in another world. I guess these guys are still out in Disneyland."

Jeff Hornacek also had 22 points and Howard Eisley added 12 off the bench for the Jazz, who committed only six turnovers but shot just 41 percent (33-of-70) from the field.

Leading 26-23 after one quarter, the Clippers went ahead 44-27 after rookie Maurice Taylor led them on a 18-4 run. Taylor scored six of his 12 points, while Wright and Robinson added four apiece during the surge. Robinson's 21-footer capped it with 6:03 to go.

Rogers boosted the lead to 63-42 with a layup early in the third quarter before the Jazz heated up with help from Stockton, who scored his team's next nine points.

Utah continued to crawl back and, after a tip-in by Taylor with 73 seconds left extended the Clippers' advantage to 80-70, the Jazz cut it to 82-77. Hornacek had 10 points as Utah shot 67 percent from the field and 14-of-17 from the line in the third quarter.

In the final period, the Jazz appeared ready to keep chipping away after Eisley began the quarter with a free throw. But Wright answered with a layup and the Jazz got no closer as the Clippers snapped a five-game home losing streak.

The Jazz held the lead for 39 seconds in the first quarter when a pair of free throws by Malone put them up, 20-19.
