GAME RECAP

Eddie Jones scored 28 points and Kobe Bryant added 26 as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Portland Trail Blazers for the first time in five regular-season meetings, 122-115.

Nick Van Exel returned from a two-game absence due to a strained left hip flexor to contribute 23 points and 11 assists for the Lakers, who had dropped the last three regular-season games last season and the first meeting of this season to the Trail Blazers.

Los Angeles did oust Portland in five games in the first round of last season's Western Conference playoffs, but had not beaten the Blazers in the regular season since December 13th, 1996.

Rookie Rick Brunson scored all 19 of his points in the final period to help Portland close a 23-point deficit to seven points. The Blazers lost for just the fourth time in their last 10 regular-season games at the Great Western Forum.

The Lakers began to pull away late in the first quarter. Leading 24-22, they used an 18-5 spurt that extended to the middle of the second quarter. Bryant had seven points in the run, which Van Exel capped with a layup for a 42-27 lead with 6:30 remaining in the second.

Los Angeles had its biggest lead of the first half when Van Exel's 11-footer made it 56-40 with 1:28 left. They maintained that lead at 58-42 at the break behind 15 points each from Jones and Bryant.

"We got them to do all the things we wanted them to do," Jones said. "We got the ball out of the guys' hands that we wanted the ball out of."

A three-point play by Bryant gave the Lakers their largest lead, 90-67, with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter. The lead was still a seemingly safe 94-74 entering the final period before Portland began chipping away.

A 14-4 burst that actually began late in the third brought the Blazers within 96-83 after Brunson hit a free throw with 8:41 to go. Another extended spurt, this time 12-4, allowed Portland to slice the deficit to single digits at 111-103 with 2:23 to play after a dunk by rookie Alvin Williams.

"We're glad to have won the game, obviously," said Lakers coach Del Harris, who moved past former Boston coach K.C. Jones into 18th place on the all-time victories list with 523. "But basically I hate to see our team get careless and loose-ended with a big lead. That's embarrassing, not to be able to execute better than that just because we have a lead. These are things that young teams just have to go through."

Brunson, who shot 6-of-8 from the field, got Portland within 120-113 with 12.7 seconds left, but the Blazers got no closer.

"I'm pleased with that last group that came out there and how hard they played," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "They gave us a chance to rattle the cage a little bit and maybe get back in the game. I was really disappointed with the way we played in the first half. Defensively we were really soft and we paid the price."

Bryant was 13-of-13 from the foul line as the Lakers had four players score 20 or more points for the third straight game. Shaquille O'Neal finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds as Los Angeles shot 55 percent (43-of-78) from the floor.

Arvydas Sabonis had 17 points and nine rebounds and Isaiah Rider contributed 15 points for the Blazers, who shot 48 percent (43-of-89).
