GAME RECAP

Tracy Murray scored 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of jumpers in a decisive run, as the Washington Wizards defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 104-88, for their third straight victory.

Juwan Howard added 22 points and matched a season high with 13 rebounds and Calbert Cheaney scored 20 points for Washington, which also has won three straight games at home. The Wizards (25-23) went a season-high two games over .500 for the second time this season and scored over 100 points for the fourth straight contest.

Rookie Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who averaged 25.3 points and 11.7 rebounds in his last three games, finished with 18 and three for Cleveland, which had a two-game winning streak halted and lost on the road for the third straight time. The Cavs allowed 100 points for the first time in 12 games.

"Washington did a great job," said Cavs coach Mike Fratello. "They beat us off the glass and on transition. They basically just beat us up. We didn't get the loose balls. Our defense was basically non-existent. We'll just try to do this correct tomorrow (against Atlanta)."

Cleveland All-Star forward Shawn Kemp collected 14 points and eight rebounds before receiving back-to-back technical fouls and an ejection late in the third quarter.

"You never know whan can happen in this league," said Kmep. "This is only the second time in the history of my playing ball that I've been ejected. You take it and go on. He (the ref) saw my mouth move and he just made a decision."

Ilgauskas and Kemp combined for 18 points in the first quarter as the Cavs assumed a 32-28 lead. The margin was 36-31 with 9:06 to go in the second period before Howard, Terry Davis and Harvey Grant each tallied four points in a 16-2 burst.

Grant's jumper with 3:58 left capped the run and gave Washington a 47-38 advantage. Cleveland scored just 11 points and shot 5-of-20 from the floor in the quarter, trailing 53-43 at the intermission.

"Offensively, early in the ballgame, we exploited the mismatch and he (Howard) was scoring (on Cedric Henderson)," said Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "We shot the ball well. When you only have nine guys, you have to pick your spots. We were efficient on the offensive boards."

The Wizards still led by 10 points less than two minutes into the second half when Ilgauskas netted five points in a 12-2 spurt, including a jumper that evened the score at 62-62 with 7:05 to go.

Washington took a 79-76 lead into the final period and scored the first six points, including a layup by Cheaney that extended the gap to 85-76 with 9:40 to play.

After Vitaly Potapenko converted a three-point play and a jumper with 8:30 left to narrow the deficit to 85-81, Howard and Cheaney nailed jumpers, Murray hit a pair of shots and Cheaney added another basket with 5:24 remaining to bump the lead to 95-81.

The Cavs had 12 points in the fourth period on 3-for-17 shooting.

Rod Strickland totaled 13 points and 13 assists for Washington, which had just nine healthy players. Chris Webber was out with a right shoulder injury, Ledell Eackles had right knee problems and Tim Legler is suffering from a bad hamstring.

"I didn't change my game at all, with him (Webber) or without him I've got to come and play no matter what," said Howard. "When you miss 22 points and nine rebounds, everyone has to step it up and that's what we did. We have to beat a lot of these conference teams right now because if the season ended now, we know we wouldn't be in the playoffs."

Wesley Person tallied 15 points and rookie Cedric Henderson had 13 for Cleveland, which shot 43 percent (32-of-75) from the floor and was outrebounded, 48-37.

The Wizards avenged a 110-101 loss to the Cavs on November 22nd. Forward Ben Wallace started and was scoreless, but registered a career-high five steals.
