GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 30 points in three quarters and Matt Geiger added 18 and 14 rebounds as the Charlotte Hornets stayed perfect against the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 108-93 rout.

Rice had 18 points and Geiger 16 and 10 boards in the first half as Charlotte used a 24-3 run spanning both quarters to assume a 58-50 lead at the break.

"For the most part, we played hard on defense, and offensively, we were able to run our plays effectively," said Rice. "I wanted to go into the All-Star break with some good confidence."

The Grizzlies hit the first basket of the third period to pull with six points, but Rice sparked a 13-2 surge with seven points as the Hornets took a double-digit lead they did not relinquish. Charlotte rode the run to its sixth victory in as many meetings over Vancouver.

"We ran him (Rice) off a lot of picks and he also created some of his shots going to the basket," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who covered the hot-shooting Rice most of the way, scored 19 points and Tony Massenburg collected 16 and nine rebounds for the Grizzlies, who head into the All-Star break losers of six in a row.

"This is a game that we have to just put behind us and come out after the break with a clear head and more successful second half of the year," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "We are just not playing good basketball."

Vancouver took its last lead at 13-12 on a layup by Sam Mack with 6:23 left in the opening quarter. Rice took over soon after, scoring eight points while Geiger added six in the lengthy burst. Rookie Travis Williams capped the run with a lay-in 36 seconds into the second period, giving Charlotte a 36-16 bulge.

"I was just out there tonight having fun," said Williams, who had seven points in 24 minutes. "I'm going home (Friday) to get a little break. I'm a reserve. I just have to step up and take advantage of my opportunities when they come."

The Grizzlies roared back, going on an 11-2 surge of their own and trimming the deficit to 38-27 on a tip-in by Massenburg. They continued to chip away, drawing within eight at the half.

The Hornets put away Vancouver for good early in the third quarter by scoring 13 of the first 17 points. Rice capped the decisive run with a three-pointer and a layup as the Hornets took a 71-54 advantage with 8:19 to go.

Rice, coming off a 14-point performance in Tuesday's victory over Boston, hit 12-of-18 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Reserve J.R. Reid had 12 points, mostly after the issue was decided, and David Wesley added 11 and eight assists for Charlotte, which shot 45 percent (38-of-84) from the floor and 28-of-33 from the line.

"I consider myself a winner and just try to do what's best for this team," said Rice. It's always good to be able to sit down in the fourth and watch the other guys get their chance."

"Glen Rice is a great shooter," Abdur-Rahim said. "When he gets rolling, he seems unstoppable. He really hurt our team tonight."

Lee Mayberry and Pete Chilcutt came off the bench to give the Grizzlies 13 and 12 points, respectively. Vancouver shot 45 percent (34-of-76) from the floor and committed 19 turnovers which were converted into 23 points by Charlotte.
