GAME RECAP

Jamal Mashburn scored 21 points and Alonzo Mourning added 16 to lead the the Miami Heat to a season high-tying fourth straight victory, 91-81 over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Atlantic Division-leading Heat picked up right where they left off before the All-Star break, recording their third straight road win and improving to 4-0 in February. The victory kept Miami 3 1/2 games ahead of the second-place New Jersey Nets.

"We played very well defensively," said Heat coach Pat Riley. "Except for some offensive rebounding problems, I believe that the defense won the game for us."

The Heat, who led from start to finish, took control early. They used a 7-0 burst to expand a 13-10 lead in the opening quarter. All-Star Tim Hardaway triggered the surge with a three-pointer and capped it with two free throws with 2:25 left.

Cedric Henderson netted 18 points, Wesley Person 15 and All-Star Shawn Kemp 14 for the Cavs, who suffered their third straight loss in dropping consecutive home games for the third time this season.

Hardaway's production was limited however, as he was ejected along with Cavs center Vitaly Potapenko after a brief shoving match with 2:49 remaining in the third quarter. Hardaway finished with just 11 points on 2-of-7 shooting but did dish out eight assists for Miami, which overcame 23 turnovers.

"In the third quarter I was trying to get over a pick and got tangled up (with Potapenko), and he threw an elbow at me that caught my face a little bit," Hardaway explained. "It really didn't catch me but I saw it. Then I went to the hole about two plays later, he gave me a little elbow right to the chin. When somebody throws elbows at me intentionally, I have to react.

"He's done it to a lot of our ballplayers," continued Hardaway. "But he is a dirty ballplayer and a lot of people around the league know that. It was intentional."

Potapenko, who finished with nine points and three rebounds in only 13 minutes off the bench, refused to comment on the incident.

"It was a physical game," he said. "We still have one game left against them this year."

Voshon Lenard finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat, who hit 48 percent (30-of-62) from the field, held a 43-40 rebounding edge and blocked eight shots.

The Cavaliers pulled within 28-22 in the second quarter when Person hit a three-pointer with 6:57 to go, but Eric Murdock answered from behind the arc as the Heat opened it up. Miami opened a 47-33 advantage on a free throw by Dan Majerle as the half came to a close.

Miami poured it on in the third period, carving its biggest lead at 59-41 on the strength of an 8-0 run. P.J. Brown, who finished with eight points and eight boards, got things rolling with a free throw and Mourning capped the burst with an emphatic dunk off an alley-oop pass.

The listless Cavaliers failed to make a run in the fourth quarter, hitting only three baskets, all by Henderson, who had a fine showing in the Rookie Game at All-Star Weekend with 14 points. But the first came with just with 5:21 to go.

"We haven't been the same team for three games," said Cavaliers coach Mike Fratello. "Not to take anything away from Miami, who basically dominated us throughout the game. They were much more physical, they defended well, and we had a hard time getting a clean look at the basket."

Both teams spent a lot of time at the line as a combined 60 fouls were called. The Heat was 25-of-34 from the line, while the Cavaliers, who have lost seven of their last eight meetings with the Heat, were 27-of-39 from the stripe.
