GAME RECAP

All-Star Steve Smith scored 27 points and fueled a fourth-quarter spurt and Alan Henderson had 19 points and 15 rebounds in his first start of the season, leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 108-100 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Mookie Blaylock added 20 points and 12 assists for the Hawks, who have won four of six following a five-game losing streak. Atlanta, which improved to 14-1 when scoring over 100 points, has won eight of its last nine meetings with the Bucks.

"This was a heck of a win for us," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We lost two guys unexpectedly, but we didn't let that bother us. Our bench played well and it got everyone else pumped up. We didn't try to do much individually and we played well as a team. We played with poise and then at the end we played smart."

Henderson was inserted into the starting lineup in place of Christian Laettner, who had the flu. Guard Eldridge Recasner did not play due to a sprained ankle.

Glenn Robinson's 15-foot jumper with 6:43 remaining drew the Bucks within 94-92 before Atlanta scored the next eight points for a 102-92 lead with 5:04 to go. All-Star Dikembe Mutombo sank a hook shot, Smith hit two free throws and nailed a jumper and Blaylock capped the run with a layup.

"We were very limited tonight with Christian and Eldridge out," Smith said. "We hope we can get off to a fast start in the second half of the season like we did in the beginning."

The Hawks shot 73 percent (11-for-15) from the field in the fourth quarter and outscored Milwaukee, 27-19. Smith had nine points and Blaylock added seven and four assists in the final period.

"It was a good win for us," Blaylock said. "Once you get the ball moving it's easier offensively. Once others get hurt you want to be out there. I got a little tired, but you have to expect to play minutes. I don't worry about who's in for them at point guard, I just go out and play."

Ray Allen scored 28 points and Robinson added 24 for Milwaukee, which has dropped consecutive games after a season-high six-game winning streak. The Bucks played without starting point guard Terrell Brandon, who suffered a sprained left ankle in Thursday's loss to Miami.

"Our defense was not sharp tonight due to the layoff," Bucks coach Chris Ford said. "Our rotations were not sharp and we could not double team. On defense we made an awful lot of mistakes. We got good shots but Mutombo on defense is an intimidating factor. Without Terrell it takes out an important part of our offense."

Mutombo collected 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks and Tyrone Corbin added 12 points for the Hawks, who shot 52 percent (41-for-79) from the field.

Ervin Johnson had 14 points and Tyrone Hill added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who shot 46 percent (36-for-78) from the field and 46 percent (6-for-13) from three-point range.

"We had four days off so we have to get back at it," Allen said. "It wears me out when Terrell doesn't play. Myself, Elliot (Perry) and Mike (Curry) have to take over the ballhandling abilities. Terrell is our chemistry. When we lose a player like that we can't break down. It's going to be tough tomorrow against Detroit, but we just have to stick to the basics."

Blaylock scored seven points in the second quarter, helping Atlanta to a 52-45 lead at the break. But Allen netted 12 points in the third as the Bucks forged an 81-81 tie entering the final quarter.
