GAME RECAP

All-Star Karl Malone scored 13 of his 29 points in the decisive third quarter and Jeff Hornacek added 12 of his 21 in the period, rallying the Utah Jazz to their 13th straight home victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, 106-98.

The Clippers played Utah even in the first half, leading until Malone's three-point play forged a 56-56 halftime deadlock. The Jazz powered into the lead for good with a 13-2 burst to open the third quarter.

Hornacek, who captured the Long Distance Shootout at All-Star Weekend, scored the first five points of the run with a three-pointer and a jumper before Malone, who added 14 rebounds and five assists, scored his four points in the surge.

"We weren't too rusty after the five-day layoff but we seem to always have a tough time playing these guys," Hornacek said. "They push the ball up the court so well and we don't do a good job all the time of getting back."

Malone was 10-of-19 from the field and 9-of-12 from the foul line, while Hornacek connected on 9-of-13 from the floor.

John Stockton contributed 12 points and 10 assists as the Jazz avenged a 111-102 loss to the Clippers, suffered a week ago. Utah pulled within 1 1/2 games of first-place San Antonio in the Midwest Division.

Reserve James Robinson scored 22 points and Lamond Murray netted 15 and grabbed 11 rebounds for Los Angeles, which lost its fifth straight on the road and fell to 4-23 away from home. The Clippers shot 6-of-21 from three-point range and remained winless at the Delta Center.

Los Angeles fared a little better from inside the arc and shot 41 percent (34-of-82) overall. Eric Piatkowski scored 18 points and Pooh Richardson added 13 off the bench for the Clippers, who were dominated 50-35 off the backboards.

Adam Keefe scored eight points and Hornacek added seven as the Jazz started quickly, taking a 30-20 lead after one quarter. But Los Angeles roared back in the second and pulled even at 40-40 on two free throws by Murray with 5:49 to play.

"We tend to let our guard down against teams that don't have winning records," said Keefe. "We can't afford to be giving up wins against these teams."

Keefe scored 12 points and pulled down six rebounds, and reserve Greg Foster netted 10 points for the Jazz, who shot 48 percent from the field and won for the ninth time in their last 10 home games.

The Jazz kept the pressure on after scoring 13 of the first 15 points of the second half. After Lorenzen Wright's bucket cut the deficit to 80-68 with 1:52 to go in the third, Utah used jumpers by Malone and Hornacek, and a lay-in by Malone with 37 seconds left to help open an 87-70 bulge after three quarters.

"Stockton really picked the defense up out front in the second half," said Clippers coach Bill Fitch. "It was a little bit more aggressive. He could smell blood and then they came at us pretty hard."

Los Angeles, which has lost nine of its last 10 and 13 of its previous 15 games, was 7-of-29 from the floor in the third period.
