GAME RECAP

Rod Strickland had 32 points and 13 assists and Calbert Cheaney scored 14 of his 28 points in the decisive second quarter as the Washington Wizards held on for their fifth win in six games, 110-104 over the lowly Los Angeles Clippers.

Terry Davis added 12 points and 13 rebounds for Washington, which played without injured forwards Chris Webber and Juwan Howard -- its two leading scorers -- for the second straight game. The Wizards, who went three games over .500 for the first time this year, swept the season series from Los Angeles and have won seven of the last eight meetings between the teams.

"Considering we played last night and only with nine people, we played well and I'm proud of us," Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "It took us a while to get out second wind because the Clippers played us so well in transition offense, pushing the ball up court."

Rodney Rogers dunked with 7:06 left in the second quarter to give the Clippers a 44-41 lead, but Cheaney took over and scored 12 of the next 14 points. He scored four straight before Tracy Murray's jumper put the Wizards ahead for good, 47-46 with 4:32 left in the period.

Cheaney hit a pair of jumpers around Rogers' dunk and sank another basket with 2:38 to play, giving Washington a 55-48 lead. Tracy Murray dunked, Davis converted a layup and added a free throw as the Wizards took a 60-48 lead with 92 seconds to go in the half. Washington took a 65-52 lead into the break.

"They put a smaller player on me so I tried to take advantage of that," Cheaney said. "We just have to keep rolling. It feels even better to do this with our two stars out and it gives us even more confidence when they do come back."

"Cheaney had the hot hand. They tell me if somethng isn't broken, don't fix it," Bickerstaff said. "I think it showed a lot of discipline of our team to recognize who had the hot hand and to stay with it."

Rogers tied a career high with 34 points, Lamond Murray added 28 and Lorenzen Wright chipped in 12 points and matched a career high with 22 rebounds for the Clippers, who suffered their 10th loss in 11 games.

"When Rodney hit the three I thought it got us back into it, but then I don't think we were as patient as we should have been," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "If we could take out the second quarter it could've been a different game."

The Clippers chipped away through the fourth quarter and got as close as 100-97 on Brent Barry's driving layup with 2:50 to play. But Cheaney made a layup and Ben Wallace dunked to make it 104-97 with 87 seconds left. Rogers nailed a three-pointer to pull the Clippers within four, but Strickland sealed the victory with five free throws in the final 29 seconds.

"I've always been a penetrator and even with the new rule I'm still getting beat up," Strickland said. "Right now with the two big guys out, I have to be more aggressive. We've had a lot of injuries, but we're getting better and better. We were inconsistent early, but I think everything is starting to come together."

Strickland has 53 points, 33 assists and 18 rebounds in his last two games.

"Of course they are missing Howard and Webber, but they played well last night without them so we knew that they would come to play again tonight," Lamond Murray said. "They came out and played a great game and disrupted our flow."

Lamond Murray scored four straight points to increase the Clippers' lead to 40-29 with 9:55 to play in the first half. But the Wizards outscored the Clippers, 36-12, the rest of the quarter. Tracy Murray hit a 15-foot jumper and nailed a three-pointer to close the Wizards within 42-41 with 7:30 remaining.

Tracy Murray finished with 18 points and Wallace added eight and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 17-for-26 (65 percent) from the field in the second quarter and 46-for-96 (48 percent) overall.

The Clippers used a 17-8 run, keyed by Wright's seven points, to grab a 33-21 lead with 1:59 left in the first quarter. But Darvin Ham dunked and Cheaney made a pair of layups to pull the Wizards within 34-27 after one.

Darrick Martin had nine points and nine assists for the Clippers, who shot 46 percent (37-for-81) from the floor and 23 percent (5-for-22) from three-point range.
