GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 13 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter as the Charlotte Hornets held on for a 103-96 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, winning at home for the 11th straight time in this series.

Rice's two free throws snapped a 70-70 tie with 1:40 left in the third quarter to give Charlotte the lead for good. Vernon Maxwell, who scored 19 points, followed with a three-pointer and a pair of foul shots to build the lead to 77-70 heading into the fourth.

"It really was good to see Glen moving without the ball. He had an excellent night," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "Vernon had another good night and we needed it. We got some good medium-range shots and inside shots, which led to free throws to complement our good outside shooting."

Rice opened the final period with a jumper and scored nine straight Charlotte points late in the period, helping his team to a 97-90 lead. Allen Iverson answered with a three-point play before the Hornets' Matt Geiger, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds, hit a tip-in with 59 seconds left.

"Rice was hot tonight," Iverson said. "It is hard to stop someone who is hitting shots when you have someone on them. So you know he is going to hit when he is wide open."

Iverson scored 30 points and hit a free throw to trim the deficit to 99-94, but David Wesley drained a back-breaking jumper with 29 seconds left as Charlotte snapped a two-game skid.

Maxwell drained five three-pointers and Rice hit four from behind the arc for the Hornets, who have not lost at home against Philadelphia since April 17th, 1992.

"Playing alongside Vernon has been great for me and the team," Rice said. "We're gonna need him down the stretch. We got it going again tonight, we just have to keep it going well."

Jim Jackson had 20 points and seven rebounds and Theo Ratliff added 17 and eight for the 76ers, who continuously tried to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter. They hit 9-of-16 shots in the final 12 minutes but were never able to go in front.

"We battled and had a chance to win the game," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "Glen (Rice) hit some big shots but they had three offensive rebounds in the last minute or so. We had our chance but did not get the defensive rebounds."

Derrick Coleman, who had 16 points and eight rebounds, pulled the 76ers within 82-79 with 8:19 to play, but Geiger answered with a layup and a dunk off an assist from Wesley.

Iverson scored the next seven points for Philadelphia to decrease the deficit to 88-84 with 3:57 remaining, but Rice responded with a three-pointer.

Wesley finished with 12 points and eight assists and Anthony Mason added 10 points and eight rebounds for Charlotte, which missed just two of its 22 free throws. Rice hit all eight of his foul shots and was 14-of-27 from the floor, while Maxwell buried 5-of-7 from three-point range.

"I think we did a fairly good job tonight, we shot the ball well," Wesley said. "To get Vernon like we did is a huge plus to our team. He's a good player, he came in and has helped out greatly."

"Vernon came off their bench tonight and gave them a big lift," Coleman said. "When he is on, he is on. When he's off, he is off. He was definitely on tonight and made it difficult for our team to win."

The first half was tight throughout, with neither team taking a lead of more than five points. Geiger's dunk with 17 seconds left in the second quarter knotted the game at halftime, 46-46, and Philadelphia never led again.

The Sixers were just 16-of-23 from the line, but connected on 50 percent from the field (36-of-72) and made 8-of-16 from behind the arc. Philadelphia, which just ended a seven-game losing streak with a 91-90 triumph over Dallas on Wednesday, has dropped six in a row on the road.
